A few quick questions

Whats is a 3g and a 2g.. I have looked, and havent really found the answer.

Also, I have a 2001 gt 5 speed..

I had recently been to a carshow/street race thing, and I heard alot of people talking about stuff they had done with their cars, well... most of them were saying stuff about..

Cams
Intake
Exhaust
Turbos
Pulleys

I'm not so interested in turbos, and I would like to know what the best cams would be for my car (i'm looking for a lowend rpm boost instead of highend) what exhaust, and what intake.

Also I wanted to know about performance chips, what are some good ones, have any of you had any? Heard anything? And What are some prices? Thanks

Re: A few quick questions

Well 2G and 3G refer to the generation of the car or the body style, if you have on 01 then you have a 3G. As far as the parts are conserned I can't help ya there I havnt started my build up yet still just wanna let the car settle in after I rebuilt the frame and body to make sure nothing is gonna fall off lol..

Re: A few quick questions

Just for future reference...

90-94 = 1g's
95-99 = 2g's
2000+ = 3g's

Before you start modding the car, you really should have some goals set in mind first. I've seen some people who go and start doing one thing and then turn around and change their mind cause they decide to go a different route with something... Depending on if you plan on staying N/A or if you eventually will go turbocharged in the future will depend on which set of cams would be better for the car. I mean, you can go and build it up as N/A first, but to me it seems very expensive with cams and such if you go and decide you wanna turbocharge it then... Do you just plan on giving it a little more power? Making it a track car? Show car?... It really all depends what direction you wanna go with it on what you should do...

Re: A few quick questions

I dont not have any intentions of turbo/super charging my car, because IMHO they wind up having way too many problems, and just don't seem to last in the long run. i'm not looking for a track/show car, Just a little something that can compete when someone decides to pull up next to me.

Alrighty then. Well here is the basic path you should take for now...

Naturally, its gonna help the car a good bit to breath better. So first off I would get a decent cold air intake, a nice header that won't warp with a 2.5" free flowing exhaust for it... That'll help it with the throttle response and give you better breathing for all over your powerband.

After that I would look into some lightweight pulleys and possibly a lightweight flywheel and heavier clutch package. That will help the motor to rev quicker through your RPM's and the clutch will help it to hold power better without letting the clutch slip any with the added power you'll be freeing up.

Next I would look into a short throw shifter just for more precise shifts and possibly some shifter linkage bushings that are either polyeurothane or steel. That will take any slack or play out of the linkage and it will feel much stiffer and you can throw it into gear much nicer IMO...

Then I would look into upgrading ignition components... Perhaps better plugs and wires along with an aftermarket coil/coilpack. I'm not sure how the ignitions are setup on 3g's...

As far as computer programmers/chips, again I have no knowledge on them for 3g's. Hopefully another member can point you in a direction for that subject...

After you get all your basic mods done with, then I would move onto more expensive parts, such as cams... I'm not sure what there is to offer in the cam department for your 3g, but I'm sure there are several options. You will wanna pick a cam that will be suited with the mods you have already done, and for a N/A motor. You don't wanna get anything too gutsy that would be better suited with a turbo. It just won't help you in the long run...

Ummm... I think I've covered most of the basic mods that you could do to squeeze a little extra umph out of your car... I hope it helps ya out some...

Re: A few quick questions

blackcrow, half the things listed will make the 3g throw codes. It's covered in the guide to modification at the top of the forum, but Blackcrow has nailed it for practically every other car on the road, and you can try those things, but i'm letting you kno, your cost to benefit ratio is worse than most 4 cyl motors.

Oh, I didn't realize 3g's ECU's were so picky... Does it throw it into a limp mode when you get a CEL also? If so then I'm sure there is a way to bypass it or disable it...

Re: A few quick questions

The best bet other than a full 1k+ stand alone is flashing your ECU. (basicly reprograming it.)

Theres 2 ways to do this, 1. you flash the stock ECU, 2. You swap out your ECU with one from an EVO. both require lots of knowlege and the ability to do minor programing.

As for ignition, a far as I know the stock one is fine. But if you go turbo you NEED to upgrade injectors.

Re: A few quick questions

no limp mode, but the CEL will come on with pulleys

it compensates for ignition, not that making the ignition better changes anything b/c it is actually set up nicely already

and most chips the ECU will compensate for and you will not gain any power, this includes teh Apexi SAFCII

now if you read the guide to modifying you will probably have everything covered

Re: A few quick questions

nvm Check engine light. So... I'm still a bit confused on what is available to be done to this particular car. So far, it seems like all I can do is maybe put an intake on it, and go through some rediculous reprogramming of my ecu.

Reading the modifying your 3g sticky will answer most of your questions.
