Re: Possible '05 Elantra purchase.....

average real MPG is around 30 on highway and 26 in town (I got up to 35mpg a few times but I was driving like a 80yo granny! lol)

Main troubles are water infiltrations in the doors, some people that have the electrical options have their mirrors move all by themselves or auto lock/unlock stop working, etc ... so either don't take the electrical package or have the inside of the door inspected and sealed.

Also the wheel bearings are not long lasting, chances are you'll have to change one or two and even though they are fairly cheap (20 or 30$ each) they are "pressed" on the wheel hub so they need special equipment to remove and install them (a 100$ job each if I remember correctly).

Parts price aren't that bad but aren't cheap either, couldn't tell the maintenance price as I do everything myself and don't keep track of it.

Brakes, oil changes, plugs & wires, air filter and other simple maintenance are easy and cheap to do, but the fuel filter is in the fuel tank, so it's an hour job AND you have to remove the back seat.

Don't know about 500 miles trip but the comfort is ok for 200 miles one!

Good luck!
