Not sure to panic or not

My 3000GT is running great, and I don't think I'm losing mileage at all, but I tend to worry about things a lot, and am very perceptive, which might help me for the most part. i noticed yesterday that I could hear something besides my engine running and my exhaust, that there was what seems like a cricket squeaking sound added in there.

I turned on my engine and looked under the hood and I believe I've traced it down to my timing belt and something along there is making the squeaks. I have 120,000 miles on my car and the person I bought the car from changed the timing belt at 70,000 miles.

What kind of problem do you think this is where it is rubbing or whatever and causing squeaking?

Could driving this pose a risk at all?

Do you think this would be a pulley's fault at all, like the idler's pulley or the tensioner's pulley?

I really need help because I'm still young and inexperienced with car troubles really yet and I want to learn more but it takes time, thank you to anyone who can help with question/problem of mine.

Re: Not sure to panic or not

If you could take a video clip that would be great, but first just check the belts (alternator and power steering) by spraying a little water on them one at a time until the squeaking goes away for a moment, and that's the belt that needs adjusting. Look here for help.

Re: Not sure to panic or not

certainly possible it could be a pulley. or maybe water pump. from what u described, it doesnt sound like a rub. Hopefully your serpentine just needs tightening or something simple like that.

did he say whether he did all that stuff at 70k too, or just the belt?

if he only did the belt, i would start saving for a full 120k. If he did a full 60k, i would investigate further before spending $400 and 4 hours to chase down a little squeek.

Re: Not sure to panic or not

yes, jason can get you good prices on parts!

anyway, If your at 120 already, then its time for a tune up anyway, and from the sound that means that something is probably wearing out already. I had a weird sound comming from my engine, it was due foor a tune up and i did it, the sound turned out to be the water pump bearings.

so, check the easy belts first, but think about doing a tune up soon either way.

Re: Not sure to panic or not

something similar to this happend to me a little while ago, though the chirping wasnt constant...only around very low RPMs. Turns out it was just the fan belt, a few squirts of Belt Dressing from Wal Mart got rid of the sound til I could take it in to have it replaced, and Voila! No more sound.
