97 Golf radio problems

So I took my golf in to get it checked out. they unhooked the battery while looking at it. The thing is, my radio has that anti-theft device on it where if it loses power you need to enter that four digit code. I know how to enter the code. I didn't want to take it in to get it done. I heard that you can take the serial from the back of the radio and go to the dealer and they'll give you the code so you don't have to pay $100 for it to be done. Well, I unhooked the radio, hooked it back up, and now I can't even enter in the code. Every time I hold the SCAN and MODE button, it just blinks "SAFE" instead of letting me enter the code. I lost a couple screw along the way while unhooking everything. Could that be the problem? I don't see why it would. But any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
