Remote Contol Mirrors 98 Tahoe

I am having problems with the remote control mirrors on my 98 Tahoe. They seem to have a mind of their own. Sometimes they work perfectly, other times I can only adjust them up or down and at other times they will not work at all. Perhaps someone has already experienced this and can offer some suggestions.
