1997 Transmission Bump

Its is a 1997 camry, 4 cyc with 150,000 miles. Lately when I shift from park to drive, here is a delay in engagement of the tranmission into gear. It typically takes a slight step on the gas, and then it kicks into gear and runs fine after that. This happens occasionally, and not all the time.

I know I should not have the transmission flushed with such high miles, but I have been keeping the transmission oil clean, but purging from the oil pan every so often and adding the difference. I have not had the drive axle oil replaced for a long time.

Could it be the transmission, or the filter screen, or a vacuum advanced leak.

Can you PLs advise
Thanks

Re: 1997 Transmission Bump

If the fluid level has been good I would start with dropping the pan and inspecting/changing the filter.

Re: 1997 Transmission Bump

Do as RIP says initially, but a delayed egagement into reverse is usually a sign of low trans pressure. Reverse gear engagement demands the highest pressure in a trans. You may have a leaky valve body or internal gasket in the trans causing this. The pressure can be checked fairly easily. You could specifically ask for that check at a trans shop to see. Has the trans ever had any work done on it?

Re: 1997 Transmission Bump

The transmission never had any work since new. The bump occurs when I go from Park to Drive, only. It does not do it in reverse.

I will pull down the oil pan and check for filter this week. If still no good I will take it to trans shop for inspection as recomended above.

Thank you for taking the time to respond quickly, and I will do likewise when T/S is complete with findings.

Re: 1997 Transmission Bump

I have changed the filter screen and trans oil in pan. There has been no further reports of trans bump so far.
