Just Curious Engine Swap Question
I was thinking. I have pretty low miles on my XJ, but even when they pile up I wanna keep it for an extra vehicle, but one day I think I might wanna put a diesel engine in it and was curious to what diesel engines are good and which ones fit best, etc.
Thanks |

Re: Just Curious Engine Swap Question
You will want to find a smaller, light weight diesel if you can. I've seen some people use Volkswagen TDIs, 3.9L 4cyl Cummins engines, and a couple of Isuzu diesels. The main thing you want to look for is parts price and availability. If it were me doing the swap I would look at the 3.9 Cummins engine. It doesn't produce much power but they are relatively easy to find. V8 gas engine swaps are a good idea too. You may even see an increase in fuel economy with a modern fuel injected V8 due to the fact that they have more power to push your Jeep around in low RPMs. I think a good swap would be a 4.8 GM engine or a 5.3., they both make good power, are easy to find. and there are some companies out there that make adapter kits for them to make installation much easier. A goo example would be the 5.3 that I found with trans, computer, wiring harness, and everything else you would need from a donor vehicle. The guy only wanted $500 for all of it, and you could hear it run!
