The Speeding Thread

Hi guys, first post on this forum.

I recently went on my first road trip in my new 04' WRX and got back a couple days ago. I was going to St. Louis (from Baltimore, MD), so I basically stayed on I-70 the entire 800 miles or so. Along the way I topped out at 200kph (125 mph) on the part of 70 that goes on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, just to prove I could without getting cuaght by Penna's highway patrol Nazis.

Before leaving, my Uncle (who i was going to visit) told me a whole bunch of speeding techniques and law enforcement avoidance tips. I regularly cruised along at 100+ mph on certain portions of Inidana and Illinois, and never got a ticket (maily becuase you can see a hundred miles ahead of you). However, they do use aircraft enforcement, and how that works I'm not entirley sure (they send a car out after you, but I don't think it always works).

My Uncle told me to, when possible, get into a "speed sandwich", where you have a speeder ahead of you and one right behind you. (Or more, you want to be the "meat" of the sandwich, with "bread" in front and back) Apparently, this is the best protection if a cop decides to go after anyone, becuse the radar can only be used to nail the first guy, and the cop can only really pull over the guys behind you.

Although, I've heard of multiple cars being pulled over in wolf-packs, as well as aircraft beign used to nail everyone on the road at once.

My uncle is a bit of speed freak, and he supposedly has never let a Corvette pass him on the road. He drives a Ford Windstar (with a turbo ), and has maintined this record to the day, mainly becuase cops will most likely pull over a speeding corvette, even if the Windstar is going faster. Besides, he says, people who own fast cars have no balls for this reason, and know that they'll take the heat if they race a crap car like a minivan or a Volvo. (I belive Jay Leno or someone had an 800 hp Volvo made just for this reason.) Anyway, this won't work for me, becuse mine is a hot car already.

However, you do get these guys in hot cars drafting behind you, thinking that you're good cover for any cop down the road. When you let them pass, they just slow down and wait for you to get in front of them again. When they do this, I just blow thier doors off and make sure they never see my ass again until the next paclk of cars gets in my way. They're ussually pussies and won't follow you past 95 miles an hour.

BTW I also saw some Gumballers along the way, in some Porsches and Mercs, they are pussies too... I guess they have to be, cuase they know cops will pull them over for anything... If I was a Gumballer I'd get a crap car, pull the engine and sleeperify it, hide all the stickers and numbers and stuff, and then just win the race easy.

I was wondering what ways you guys speed exessivley on public roads without getting ticketed, and what roads you ussually like to do this on. What's your fastest, best moment speeding on the highway? What sneaky things have you seen cops do to pull people over? Tell you stories and tips...

Re: The Speeding Thread

Keep to the open interstates. And be prepared for the consequences of the inevitable reckless driving citation.

I had a friend years ago who had a 1970 Olds 442. He once went 100 mph in a 25 mph zone up a long hill most cars would have been lucky to pull 70 on. It was fun, but absolutely reckless. If a car had pulled out of any of the many hidden driveways somebody would have died.

This same friend once got major Bullitt air off of Dravus Street in Seattle, in his parent's 1974 Toyota Corolla, on a steep dowhill street punctuated by flat intersection cross streets. I remember seeing the speedo hit 70 just as we reached the flat, and watching the front arc downwards while airborne, and landing front/rear bang-bang.

20 years later, with traffic much more crowded and ticket prices way up, I would not recommend trying such a thing.

Also, remember this is a street racing forum, with speeding incidental. Read the stories for your best tips.

Re: The Speeding Thread

I used to speed alot when I was around 18. Now I think of speeding like karma. If I speed all the time then I will get pulled over at the worst possible time. If I drive normal then when I need to I can get a little gas happy.

Hope you had a good trip, and welcome to the forum.

Re: The Speeding Thread

umm no, in the court of law it will hold up if a cop catches the car infront of you speeding and he sees your a right behind him. Also its not uncommon to see a cop pull over two people at once. It happened to me. I was behind the speeder, he went to the front car, told him to follow him, slowed down to me and told me to follow him, wrote us both tickets for speeding

Re: The Speeding Thread

This happened to me on Wednesday on my way to the beach for vacation. I was obeying the speed limit(mostly) and just cruising along at the same speed of traffic. But right as I got on 70 east out of breezewood, Pa This 3.5 Maxima flew past me and I figured him as "bear bait". Thats what we call em. I was following from a distance and both of us were doing atleast 90mph when I went to check the map and didn't pay attention. I caught a glimpse of brake lights, but before it registered and before I had time to hit the brakes, we flew right past a State trooper... Oh shit. In the rear view I can see him edging out checking for cars. Sure enough he pulls out. I knew one of us were screwed I just prayed that it was the maxima because he was pretty far in front of me. I see the 3.5 liter wannabe 350 owner pull into the right lane in between many trucks and slower moving traffic. So I decided it would be safer to get in front of him and I did then I merged into the packed slow moving lane. The cop gets practically beside the maxima and (at this point in time I was praying for him not to pull ME over) Luckily the cop slowly disappears behind the red maxima and hits the lights. I didn't even look back after that. I just kept going.

I think what happened was that the cop used the radar on the car in front if me and then was already getting ready to pull out when I cruised past. And the fact that I was driving a Cavalier with no visual mods at all might have helped.

If I would have gotten pulled over, I would have lost my license for a year. So I had alot to lose. I usually don't speed much anymore and when I do I try to be careful!

Re: The Speeding Thread

So yeah anyway, who won the race??? Or am I in the wrong forum... Everything you just said is pretty common knowledge I would guess, but I appreciate the effort...

I always get in a pack when runnning on the highway long distance. Sometimes I even man up and take the lead for 20 miles or so and then cjange back up... Kinda taking turns... Its worth the risk as long as your making decent time and being safe about it...

Re: The Speeding Thread

Well the fastest I've ever gone was ~150 in my 93 SC Bird. What a rush. Wont get to far into the story, but lets just say Crown Vics aint as fast as the 3.8L SC Bird. I got pulled over along with a truck at the same time. Cop got between me and the truck and pulled us both.

I dont speed anymore, unless its back roads. (rare occasions... ) and the fastest I ever get to is about 80. (in the K5, LSC aint quite legal yet)

In virginia, on the interstate, cops hide in the median, where the trees are. There are signs infront of every cut through, so when I see the big white sign on the left, I always slow down.

Re: The Speeding Thread

meeh, i guess im a speed freak as well. i just use common sense...or what i got of that.

when im on the freeway, its ususally at about a speed of 80ish. no tickets yet, but im not looking for them.

also, ive been doing quite a bit of fast driving. drove 75ish in a 35 area and its been like that lately to get somewhere, since work is always not my friend on time lately.

either way, one set of my neighbors doesn't like it, but they cant stand me anyway, since i wash my car too much according to them, and they're always doing illegal drugs. go figure. and no one else has complained to me yet.

guess it comes down to what you know about your local police department, what their ususal spots are, and how they hide. thats pretty much all there is to it. no need for a radar detector yet...

one word of advise, dont go more than 2x the posted speed limit, otherwise you cans ay bye bye to your lisence.

Re: The Speeding Thread

i speed on the back roads, i know where every cop sits. i know it's sounds cocky, but seriously i can point to every spot they sit, every single day, at exactly wat time it is.
i've gone at most 135, that was a porsche 911 4s. but on a track i've done upwards of 180mph(that's one hell of a rush.)
the most i've done in my cars is...1995 dodge neon(stock) limiter 118, 1992 dodge stealth r/t twin turbo 110mph(road curved), 1987 porsche 944 85mph(got it last wk) and that was a short strait. the 1979 porsche 924 was like 105, then the balls kinda gave out(the cars balls), and i called it quits.
on a highway i've done 90 with the neon, no other cars have yet to get on rt.80 in jersey. but it's a hard highway to speed on, to many other morons going like 110(like my sis fiancee)

Not meaning to sound arrogant or anything, but I just don't because it's a stupid thing to do. Too many variables between the road, other drivers, and my own car; too many risks for me to justify getting somewhere a little quicker. Besides, if you're driving crazy fast, I don't think being in the middle of a "sandwich" will save you a ticket, at least not with the Minnesota State Troopers, they are ruthless.

Re: The Speeding Thread

the sandwich technique works, just gotta not fall behind more than 3 cars lengths or the radar has time to reset

They use the black strips. They time you how long it takes to get from one edge to another, and use that to figure out your speed.

From expierence, the cop can, and will, pull over all three of you, or call in back up, and you get a ticket.

Bullshit. Really. I'm calling BS. I want proof.

Wrong again. From expierence, a cop is just as likely to pull over a speeding (97 in a 50) Rav 4 as they are any speeding car. In fact, they are more likely to pull over the non sports car as it isn't designed to go fast.

What mods to you have? What are your times? A stock WRX is noting imrpessive at all. Its a marginally faster econobox.

Yeah, maybe in the midwest, but after living there for four years, I will attest to the fact that everyone in the midwest is a pussy.

There is more than enough video evidence of those guys going well over 150 on a regular basis for extended periods of time. In gutted race cars. Why don't you go down 175+on the public streets in a gutted ass car before calling the Gumballers pussies.

Its not a race, its a ralley, and if you did all that, then you wouldn't be in the ralley.

I've pegged the speedo on my Rav 4 at 110. The BMW at 150. I've taken a dealership modified E60 M5 up to 185, then the technician who did the modding took it above 200 (I think he let off at 215), on a highway. I've pegged the speedo on a dealership 335i and Z4 Hardtop. I was riding shot gun in my buds TSX with I/H/E when he was bouncing the needle.

I average cruise about 80-85. If I get caught and get a ticket, then so be it. You gotta pay to play.

Re: The Speeding Thread

I buy slow cars so it makes it difficult to speed. Seriously though I just cruise 10-15 over most places. As long as youre not driving like a fool and keep your eyes open its ok. If a cop comes out of nowhere and I think im going to get caught, I just pretend like I almost missed my turn.

I will. But aside from the same old videos on the 'net, my witnessing actual Gumballers on the road has told me that for the most part, they are pussies. They would not race me at all, on a road with no traffic and clear sight 20 miles down the road. Which, combined with my so called non-intimidating "econobox," is pretty much good enough for me to call them pussies. At least the ones I came across. And so what if they're in gutted cars? I thought you said cops will pull any car over just as well as the next non-hot car!
