all the sudden my car is very loud and slow

Please help, my little brother started up his car today and it was very loud and bogged down. It doesn't really shake or idle rough or anything, it just feels like someone swapped out the engine with a giant truck overnight (it sounds just like one). It doesn't even necessarily feel like something is wrong, if that is the first time you ever drove the car, or if you could concieve a stock escort being so loud. I am of course taking it to the shop, but since my last mechanic retired I don't really have a mechanic I can trust, so I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks!!

Sounds like an exhaust problem... not sure what could go wrong overnight, but an exhaust leak would certainly give you the extra noise.
Was any work done to the car prior to the noise?
Does the noise seem to come from the engine or from the muffler area under the car?
