1984 Bmw

I actually know nothing about BMWs (or much about cars for that matter).

I am intersted in this 1984 BMW 318. I just wondered if anyone can tell me anything I should know before I take the plunge. I've heard BMW repairs are pretty expensive - does anyone have an early 80s 3 series BMW that could tell me more about that? Also, the only thing seemingly wrong with the car is the gear shifter is sunk down about halfway. The owner doesn't know why. It still shifts ok, but is just lower and a little bit loose. Does anyone know what the problem could be, how it might be fixed and what that might cost? I don't want to get myself into another CRAPPY used car!
