Thumbs down 1991 4X4 Problems?

I just picked up a 1991 Ford Ranger and it has the electronic 4 wheel drive selector. When i hit 4x4, the light beside the button lights up, and 4x4 appears near the gauges...but it will not go into 4 wheel drive, so i was wondering if there was a way to check the electronic motor on teh transfer case w/o taking it off. Also, when i click 4x4 Low it dosn't do anything...its almost like its not hooked up...any ideas on what would cause that?

it probably is the electric motor that engages the 4wd.. you can crawl underneith the truck and engage the motor manually but i dont know how you do it

Not sure about the 91 but some have a vacuum actuated mechanism that engages the hubs. It should be a big tank mine is shaped like a ball up near the headlights.

That was the problem I had. I reconnected the hose and it worked fine
