Having Charging system problems

My 3000gt was running perfectly til I had it towed in for some work then towed back to my house. All of a sudden no power to the battery. So I jump start it and take the pos terminal off and it still runs. Next morning I come to work on it and the battery is dead. So I traced all the ground wires, checked all the fuse and relay, put on mew terminals and cleaned off everything til i came upon the "ALT" relay in the under hood fuse box. Well it has some honey like substance on it. Is that normal? I was thinking that might be the problem since everything else checks out. I even cleaned the IAC. what could be the problem?

Re: Having Charging system problems

so was 3si not working out for you? i've seen you over there a bit. we give more personal attention over here at Automotive Forums. glad you found us!

the honey looking substance is normal on these cars. its usually the di-electric grease combined with gunk form the past 10 years.

your test of pulling the positive battery terminal was to check if the alternator was good, and it checked out ok. i would then check your battery. take it to AutoZone or O'Reilly's...they do these kind of tests for free (they test battery, alternator, starter, and a few other things). they can tell if you for sure if your batter is good (may need a charge) or bad. do that then come back and let us know.

Re: Having Charging system problems

Hey Linebckr49, yea I wasn't really getting any attention over there. if you're not vr4 then you get ignored. Thanks alot Well I bought the battery from autozone and have taken it there plenty of times and they recharge it and give it back. It works for about 2 days then dies again. Should I get a new battery or just replace the alternator, shouldn't be too hard.

Re: Having Charging system problems

since they have checked out the battery as OK, i would remove your alternator and take it to them to test.
