Re: Stalling of Jeep Cherokee

I have changed the electrical box 2 months before and recently did some work on steering and A/C. The mechanic told me that everything is fine. One of the mechanic was suspiscous about fuel pump! Some of my friends also thinking about vapor lock or thermostat ! So, iwould appreciate your comments.

I'd check the fuel pump and also the fuel filter. You can also check to see what kind of fuel pressure you have on the fuel rail with it running in park. Sounds almost like a clogged fuel filter since it does it at slow speeds and sometimes at stop lights.

Re: Stalling of Jeep Cherokee

For what its worth, I had the same/similar problem/symptoms with my 01 at 77k miles.

It ended up being the CPS. Crank Pressure Sensor was bad. You should be able to get a code if the CEL came on. You may be able to get one even if the light didn't come on.

This seems to be a very common problem. Check my post of 7/19/07 earlier and all the answers I got back all came back to the same thing. The CPS was in fact bad. Once I replaced it, it no longer stalls. I would be driving down the road and out of the blue, the damn thing would just die on me. Sometimes it would start back up on its own, but most times I had to coast off the road to a stop and it would turn right over.

It stumped my mechanic for a while. He was set to drop the gas tank and mess with the sending unit and the like. I printed out a copy of the replies and sure enough, that so far has fixed the problem.

I am not a mechanic, so I don't quite understand it all, but my mechanic says the diagnostic machine they use can read both "soft" and "hard" codes. Apparently, when you go to places like AutoZone, they can only pull a soft code. In this case it was a hard code and it popped up as being bad.

Good Luck!

Ah, yes, the crank position sensor again. It does not set a CEL when it is bad because of the nature of the defect, which is not monitored.
