Can't get the key out

My '97 Blazer has been doing this for some time and it is getting worse. The tumblers will not turn all the way to the lock position so I can't get the key out. I removed the plug under the column and use a small screwdriver to push the override release to get the key out but it is getting to be a PIA. Anyone had this problem and actually fixed it?

Re: Can't get the key out

Sounds like you need a new switch before the key gets stuck in it. Happened to me while it was running.

If you are referring to the ignition switch I replaced that for a no start condition and it didn't have any affect on the key problem.

I've had that problem once in a while, most times I cant turn the key on. Try turning the steering wheel back and forth.

Re: Can't get the key out

I'm going to refer you to a link where I posted the same problem.

If you have a floor console shift, lift the boot cover up, and make sure the pin on the passenger side of the shift mechanism is working properly.
If not, clean and light oil it. It's a 2 piece white plastic mechanism, you'll see it move as you shift through the positions. The disc-pin that slides horizontally may be the problem.
If that doesn't solve the problem, you'll have to replace the solenoid on the steering column (I took mine out). It's about a 15 minute job. Remove the bottom and top wheel shrouds, then remove the solenoid pack from behind the key cylinder (black and green wires). You'll need an M4 socket to get the torq bolt off (or a needle nose pliers)

Re: Can't get the key out

1992 jimmy slt...same problem. Stuck in the run position. Had to pull the wire off the coil and disconnect the battery to shut it down. Gonna work on it today. Should be fun.
