Remove mirror assembly using a garage door!

Last night I backed out of my garage in the beautiful Bonneville I bought

LAST WEEK,

and proceeded to remove the mirror assembly by striking it against the garage door frame. AARRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Anyway, I have a new one on the way, and after it's painted I'll want to install it. Are there any fellow owners out there that could offer advice or detailed instructions as to where to start, what to watch out for (hidden plastic fasteners, etc.) so that I don't mess up anything else?

what year is the car? which side mirror is it? and is it power? i can tell you on the 92-99 style they can be kind of a pain to get to the nuts that secure it on the inside of the door, i also ripped the mirror off my 96 on the garage door. but to tell you how for sure we need to know what year it is.

I'm sorry - I forgot to include the year! It's a 2004, it's the driver's mirror, and the mirror is powered, but not heated nor equipped with memory. I was able to reattach the broken assembly to the door (using duct tape and super-glue to hold the plastic posts together inside the assembly!), so at least it isn't just hanging there while waiting for the replacement.

While I was doing that, I noticed the mirror motor cord tucks in behind the door panel, so I'll have to remove the panel to gain access to the plug. It doesn't look like it's all that easy - how did you get yours done?

im not too familiar with 04 models, on my 96 i had to remove the whole door panel and the moisture barrier. and getting to the mounting bolts was no picnic either. im not sure about your model but mine had a couple of hidden bolts, one behind the light fixture in the door and the other was behind the handle to close on the door...otherwise its mostly just the plastic fasteners that can be popped out with a lil force. i went to an auto parts store and bought a chiltons repair manual for mine they are about 15 bucks or so but they can really pay off when u can avoid taking it in to a repair shop. hope that helps u out some

I agree, the manuals are well worth the money for those that like to save money and make their own repairs. I have one for my 2000 Impala, and had one for the 1999 Grand Marquis that was T-boned and led to the purchase of the Bonny, so I'm sure I'll be getting one soon.

I have some time to research this repair, as the replacement won't be in until next week, and then has to be painted. Hopefully, I'll have the whole procedure lined out before I crack open the tool box. I'll be sure to post progress and look forward to any additional tips and information from my friends in cyberspace!
