95 transport front end noise

I have a 95 transport van that starting make a humming/whinning noise in the frontend. When I accellerate the whinning gets louder then stays the same from 55 mph and up. I thought it could be a wheel bearing or a cv joint.

Re: 95 transport front end noise

Humming/whining points to wheel bearing. If so, intensity will increase when you turn in one direction, and lessens when turning the other way.
However, the pitch of the humming is proportional to speed but the intensity can vary depending on the extent of damage.
Usually, if you jack one front wheel at a time and run it with engine at 30mph (one wheel at a time runs twice as fast - 60mph - as indicated) , you will hear it..this to identify which side as it is usually a little confusing to pinpoint the side of the problem... Of course, apply parking brake and use any convenient means to block car movement so it can be done safely.
Notice that worn out rear bearing will make about same noise but not much sensitive to turns and again, if a front end test provides no cue, jack rear wheels and rotate by hand: a damaged bearing can be heard even at low rotation speed as capable by hand. Last year I had both a front AND a rear bearing damaged after a long trip.... the rear hub is more expensive than the front.....
Changing wheel bearing is rather straight forward as the complete wheel hub is bolted ; ask for more details if needed or search through this forum as this subject has been covered many times. this one I had bookmarked long time ago, but there are many more recent.

CV joints make a very low toned rumble.

Question Re: 95 transport front end noise

OK after replacing the front wheel bearing the stearing for the van is VERY sensative when I get the van up to 65 or more the front wheels feel like they are going to fall off . I haven't retorqued the wheels yet but I don't think that is the problem.

Re: 95 transport front end noise

What did you tear down for the job? did you disconnect the tie rod end....(it was not necessary but at first I thought it helped and did so...IF you disconnected, was the adjustment changed in any way? Poor toe in/out will indeed make the steering very evasive...Toe in adjustment is zero on that car. NOw...for the wheels behave as they were to "fall off".....it must be something else...what is that? vibration? shimmy?....

Re: 95 transport front end noise

I did take the tie rod off when I replaced the wheel bearing. I feels more like a shimmy.
