battery + bolt stripped/stuck

Ok, I got a little problem went to autozone to have them check my battery. They said it was toast so I bought a new one and just got home to put it in. Now the + bolt is stripped and it won't budge!! So what do you guys think I should do I have been trying vise grips cuz its already stripped but I still can seem to move it, now my car is sitting and I cant drive it. Thing that pisses me off is that I just spent $112 on a new one and I have it sitting here. arr ~joe

Most likely it's stuck due to corrosion of the terminal. Try a teaspoon of baking soda in 6-8oz of water and poor it over the cable end (this will disolve the corrosion and neutralize the acid). Once the corrosion is disolved, the vice grips should be able to get the bolt out.

Is the battery stripped or is the head of the bolt?


I have seen easy out tools that look like a socket and are supposed to remove bolts that have the heads stripped.

Im confused. Is the bad battery out of the car yet? Doesn't autozone replace batterys? I had them install one for me for free.

If the bad battery is still in the car you might spray some pb blaster around the bolt and tap it with a hammer. You should be able to remove it without too much trouble. The bolt is going into a lead insert in the battery. Lead is soft. I have seen someone tighten one so much that the battery insert stripped and he had to buy a new battery.

now i got a problem ..ok itg started turning so i was sieked..but it just kept turning and turning and i noticed the inside part of the batery is turning too...shit now what...so im thinking if i snip the metal part of the cablw and bend it off i can go get a new bolt and slide it around the new one...but now its not gonna move with pb blaster or nothing..hmmmm

a brand new positive cable is $4.99 for standard or the Duralast Gold is $9.49 on the autozone website, and since when are batteries so expensive? i get blems from the interstate battery warehouse for $29.95 and they install them

he probably bought a diehard battery, not some crappy interstate with only 400cca. Thats why it costed so much.

Man, if i were you, i would get out some sory of bolt cutters and start hacking away at that lead bolt. Eventually you will be able to take that cable off. Once its off, you can buy a new lead bolt from wal-mart for a coul bucks. Then make sure you wire brust all that corrosion off, and maybe even apply some dielectric grease to avoid corrosion in the future.

yeah i did end up ripping it out and the new one is in and is all good..and I went to autozone a duralast gold 800cca oposed to the stock 700 so its an upgrade and yes it cost $112 without core with core it is $100...but worth it my car starts alot stronger and my driver info center never dims now..but thanks for the help guys.~joe
