Head Unit Question

Hey guys, i just bought a grand prix gtp. If your familiar, the interior has the red glow guages. My car does not have the bose system so it would be easy to upgrade my stock deck. My question is... Does anybody know of any good head units with decent sound quality that glow red to match my interior lights? I've always used pioneer decks, but it seems like all of them with decent features all glow green. I really dont want the interior of my car to look like a christmas tree. Also i know that sony has a couple red glow decks, but i really dont like sony deck quality or features at all.

Thanks for any information!!!!!!!!

Re: Head Unit Question

Most companies seem to follow blue nowadays. Older Kenwoods used to have some red. The Clarion DXZ775USB lets you choose display colors to match interior colors. Some JVC decks have a little red to them. I'm looking at my current Crutchfield catalog for this info as i'm typing this so head to their website and see if those brands work for you.

Re: Head Unit Question

Denon headunits used to be LCD with a red background, but they are expensive. Some higher level Alpines have color choices, red being one (at least for some of the buttons).

Re: Head Unit Question

Thanks a lot guys for all the suggestions!!!! I really appreciate it! One more quick question.... One more thing that drives me nuts with head unit installs is the fact that aftermarket decks all stick out a few inches from the rest of the dash. In my opinion, this looks like crap. Any ideas on how to solve this issue? Recommendations on mounting hardware? Maybe a 1.5 DIN style deck with red glow so i dont need to use an install kit, just do a quick swap. Any suggestions? or am i stuck with haveing it stick out like a sore thumb? Thanks a TON!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Head Unit Question

you would have to custom make something for it to mount deeper. and i can't say that i have seen 1.5 din head units that aren't factory ones.

Re: Head Unit Question

Pioneer is the only one I know of that made an aftermarket deck for the 1.5 dins for GM and Chrysler vehicles. Actually, I think there were two models, but one had a few extras and looked the same as the lesser model. That kind of deal.

Re: Head Unit Question

wow, a few inches (= more than 2) ..... most units are only 6"-7" deep or so. Typically the problem is that the nose piece sticks out about 1/2" or so, and yea ... that looks like doo doo.

Re: Head Unit Question

If i install an aftermarket deck, I would have to make it flat aginst the rest of the dash. It would have to look like it belongs there. I would really like to find a pioneer deck with --3 sets of rca outs, --bus input so i can hook up my ipod adapter i have already, --be able to use the factory steering radio controlls, and it has to have red glow guages. Anyone have any ideas? thanks a lot

Re: Head Unit Question

integration into the car can be difficult, but well worth the effort. Making all the lighting one basic color really looks nice.

Re: Head Unit Question

Denon decks used to have that option years ago, you bought the appropriate color bulb covers from them and removed the faceplate and swap out the covers on the bulbs with the color of your choice and put the faceplate back on and then your radio illumination matches the factory instrument lighting.

I doubt they do that anymore with the advent of LED lighting.
