Why is it smoking?
I am thinking about buying a 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX but it has a problem and i don't know what the signs of it mean. any info would be greatly valued.
The dealership stated that when the car is first turned on it sends out a puff of smoke from the exhaust, and, while driving on the highway they said it also let out puffs of smoke when shifting gears but cruising was ok. I would just like to know what the problem is and maybe how to fix it. Thanks a lot. Sam |

wat color is da smoke, black, gray white
black smoke means u probably have a oil leak or possibably your pistons rings are gone, i think also that gray or white smoke can mean that u are running rich or lean not 2 sure |

Re: Why is it smoking?
Hey sorry for bringing back this old post, but its better than creating a new one...
Anyways my car 1997 rs eclipse has the same problems: when the car is first turned on it sends out a puff of black smoke from the exhaust, and, while driving on the highway it also lets out puffs of black smoke when shifting gears but cruising is ok. I would just like to know what the problem is and maybe how to fix it. Thanks a lot.

Re: Why is it smoking?
ok GENERALLY
white smoke = coolant black or gray = unburn fuel blue = oil However a bad turbo can also smoke white depending on where it's burning oil. Even if you're a non-turbo, black smoke means running rich. Your ECU is sending out too much fuel or not enough air is getting through. Try a new air filter first.

Re: Why is it smoking?
dissconnect your negitive terminal from your battery for 10 seconds. If that dosn't fix it, you migh have an injector sticking open, or bad o2.

Re: Why is it smoking?
it resets the ecu
it erases the old code and if it comes back on that's your problem

Re: Why is it smoking?
Yea at first I thought (and still think that is running rich). The first thing I will do is buy a K&N airfilter. My other one is beat up. So which O2 sensor would be bad? (The one on the intake manifiold, right?)
Also what is this thing about a fuel injector open? Thanks

Re: Why is it smoking?
yeah it would be your front o2 sensor. I bet thats what it is. What kinda gas mileage are you getting? my o2 sensor went bad, and i knew cause my mile per gallon went down to like 12

Could the O2 sensor go bad and not throw a CEL? Cause I'm filling up every week just goin to school (30 min away) and work (2 min away).

Re: Why is it smoking?
I mean my gas is shitty, but I drive ALOT and drive kinda crazy too! I dunno I have to get a new airfilter anyways, (the old one is extremely beat up). But I doubt that, that is the problem, beacuse the 02 sensor would compensate for the lack of air by adding less fuel, right?
But IF my O2 sensor is bad, how would I change it and also how much $$$ ?? Thanks!

Re: Why is it smoking?
o2 sensors are kinda expensive. 30-50 for a bosh. all you need is a 22mm long open end wrench and its a cake walk. The o2 does through a cel when it dosnn't ossilate like it should, but their are other ways a o2 sensor can become bad.
Dissconnect the battery... let it warm up for 3-5 mins so the o2 can reach 600 degrees. then take it for a spin and see if it still has black smoke. Then try replacing the front o2. Still blowing black smoke you have a air/fuel delivery problem and unless you have the knolege to diag the issue i suggest spending the $75 to have your local Mitsubishi Service Department to diag it for you. Then you can fix it yourself.
