Why is it smoking?!

I am thinking about buying a 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX but it has a problem and i don't know what the signs of it mean. any info would be greatly valued.

The dealership stated that when the car is first turned on it sends out a puff of smoke from the exhaust, and, while driving on the highway they said it also let out puffs of smoke when shifting gears but cruising was ok. I would just like to know what the problem is and maybe how to fix it. Thanks a lot.

Sam

It doesn't specify that. I'm sorry.
What would it mean if it were:

Blue:

Black:

White:
or

Grey:?

Blue smoke it's leaking oil
White Smoke it's leaking coolant
Black I believe was Carbon buildup or running rich.
Grey don't know perhaps leaking tranny fluid ??

Yea, if it puffs smoke when it starts up, I'd say piston rings.

I really couldn't tell you. I paid about $140 for the ring set. Luckily I have a buddy that has a shop and we did it there. I took the two of us all sat and sun to do it, not to mention the special tools you need plus a new head gasket. Giving the going rate for mechanics, I'd estimate you would be looking at close to 1000 bucks. If this is something that you just want to do and isnt really required at the moment, id save up and get new pistons and rods as well.

A cracked Head could be why the smoke is white, check and see if coolant is coming out of the exhaust. If this is the case don't buy the car.
