How Do You Go About Starting Your Own Peformance Parts Company?

I want to learn how to start my own automotive performance parts company, but don't know where to start. I will be leaving to college this january to study Management. I know its kinda soon to start thinking about starting my own company, but I want to start to brainstorm now so that when I graduate I will have a strong plan of attack. Besides, I don't have to be done with school to start my own business. I could start it while i'm in school. Any suggestions you guys could give me would be helpful.

Well to start off, you would actually want to make the performance parts, and you might actually be able to sell them to the already popular companies, if they are any good....

I have one suggestion, and that is to ensure that you are going to be making your own parts, and not starting a business that just sells other's parts. That whole business has gotten very cut-throat, and I think it is slowly dying off, at least in a Darwinistic sense (meaning that only the strong shall survive), since there is something of a horsepower war in today's automotive industry anyway. I don't see a bright financial future for today's performance parts companies (again, it depends on whether you intend to manufacture, or just take to the retail sales and installation end of things).

My other advice for you is to learn as much as you can about cars, and areas for improvement, from a performance perspective of course. See if you can try your hand at making better camshafts for specific engines, or throttle bodies, or perhaps exhaust pipes and muffler designs. You get the idea. If you already have a lot of experience, I'd say that studying management is a great idea, and that you should try to line up some investors to help get your feet off the ground.

Good luck dude.

What ever you do promise us that you will never manufacture/sell a part that goes into your intake and claims to make a 35% increase in hp with out moving parts.
I think after a few years of school you will have a much clearer idea of how to go about making your business. But it is good to be actively thinking now so that you have a 'dream' and motivation to succeed at school. good luck.
