92PAve/Ultra/3800/Super/150k-stalls and won' start

92 Supercharged Park Ave Ultra will stall after driving 20km. Service engine light comes on sometimes but not always. Car will turn over but will not start for almost exactly one hour everytime. This can happen several times in one day if I have the time or urgency that I have to sit for one hour for a restart. If I make it to where I am going and turn off engine it will not restart for the almost exact 1 hour period everytime. (it has been very hot weather lately)
Checked the diagnostics using the jumper to "A-B" pins on diagnostic connector and counting the flashes of the service engine soon light.
Code 17 shows up everytime and code 56 most times. I have received some information saying cam or crank sensor and ECM.
Is the cam or crank sensor the same thing? If no, where are they?
If I was going to buy the parts do I need to buy both sensor and ECM or buy which one first?
To be sure, is the ECM the electronic module under the 3 coil package for spark?
I have cleaned all connections and the heat sink under the 3 coil pack. Checked all gnd connections I can find. Please help, it is long ride home from work when you have to sit for one hour everytime.

Re: 92PAve/Ultra/3800/Super/150k-stalls and won' start

A) The "electronic module" under the coil pack is the ignition module, the ECM itself is in the car under the dash behind the glove box.

B) Wild shot in the dark here, but the wire harness that passes the wiring for the Cam and crank sensor passes VERY close to the water pump. Perhaps the harness was inadvertantly moved even closer to the w/p during some repair or something and wreaking havoc on the wring. This would explain the cool-off period.

C) the cam and crank sensors are located as their name states; the cam sensor is on the timing cover monitoring the rotational position of camshaft and the crank sensor is mounted to the front of the motor and monitors the rationional position of the crankshaft by way of a hall effect shutter on the back of the harmonic balancer.

You can eliminate the cam sensor as a source of your stalling problem. It has nothing to do with spark! This does sound like the crank sensor going defunct! You can have the ICM tested at AutoZone. If you do, be sure to have it tested several times in rapid succession for best results!

Wild shot in the dark was a bullseye! Thanks for the help!

Thanks to both HotZ28 and wrightz28
Code 17 is cleared and hopefully never to be seen again.
Code 56 has shown up again intermittently but car is running and starting fine. Don't want to sit at the side of the road anymore! GM code reader 1.6 manual on internet says "vacuum sensor circuit fault or quad driver "B" fault" (3.8L VIN1) What should be my next step? What is a quad driver "B" fault? Where is the vacuum sensor?
Also has column stating corrosivity/add coolant. I heard a tale that coolant PH can be checked with a DVOM. Ground to coolant.True? If true, what would a good reading be?
Hopefully not too many questions that will annoy you! I am just a lowley electrician. Please load the gun for another shot!

The DVOM thingy is to see if ececrolosis is occuring.

Best way to checkcoolant is with a good ol fashion hydometer, $2 at your parts store of choice.

As for the quad driver, run a search, I know it's been discussed here berore just don't know where.
