95' Grand Marquis brake light fuse keeps blowing

After a big rain a week ago my brake light fuse blew. I tried to replace it, but everytime I stepped on the brake it would blow again. About 24 hours later I tried to replace the fuse again and it was working fine. Everything was fine until I had my car washed today and now the fuse blew again and keeps blowing when I put a new fuse. I'm guessing the rain got a wire wet. The fuse controls my brake lights, hazard lights and instrument panel warning light. I have checked the obvious places around the lights and the wires on the inside of the trunk and dried off anything that I saw was wet. Is there anywhere else I need to be looking?

Re: 95' Grand Marquis brake light fuse keeps blowing

Hi again. I had the same problem on my 98. I tried everything I could think of and then took it to the dealer.(that's how done I was) They said they found a bad ground strap but not where. I didn't care, it was fixed. I know there is one from the engine the the firewall. Maybe someone else can tell you where others are.

hello

Thanks. I was thinking something like that had to be going on, because I keep having electrical problems. There doesn't seem to be anything in common with my problems except for a bad ground. How long did it take them to find it? I need to get an idea of the kind of labor costs I'm going to run into.

Thanks again!

Re: 95' Grand Marquis brake light fuse keeps blowing

They said they spent 4 hours on it and charged me for 2 hours. You won't get any time commitment from the dealer except their hourly rate.

Well, it's in the shop now, I'll find out soon enough.

Re: 95' Grand Marquis brake light fuse keeps blowing

There is some kind of short in the steering column, but they can't tell for sure until they drop the column. The shop it's at now is trying to charge me $280 just to drop the column...NO THANKS! I have someone who can do it a lot cheaper. They said it's either the module or a wire. I'll know more tomorrow.

Re: 95' Grand Marquis brake light fuse keeps blowing

Took it to my guy and it's gonna be $110 total and here's what he said...i don't quite understand so here goes...

something about a cruise switch or pressure switch. he said when the cruise control was on and i would hit the brake somethin would leak and it eventually shorted out. This would totally explain why my cruise control hasn't worked in a while too!

DOES THAT MAKE SENSE?? LOL

Re: 95' Grand Marquis brake light fuse keeps blowing

got a little more info, it was the cruise control switch that was causing it. he said a while back Ford Explorers had a problem with the truck setting on fire and it was cus of the cruise control switch. well this is the same problem. he also said my brake line was leaking too. anyways, it's all fixed now and working great. part $25, labor $80.
