Best brake fluid
I'm going to be installing my new Russell SS brake hoses this weekend and am wondering if there is a strong preference of one brake fluid over another. The rest of the system is stock. Is a DOT4 better than DOT3 or for our application is it just a waste of $$$? I was looking at Motul DOT4 racing fluid.

Re: Best brake fluid
Excellent advice since a few weeks back I found that WalMart had opened/used gallons of Rotella Synthetic 5W40 Oil on their shelves. I'm actually not going to do it myself after all. There's way too much rust on the lines. I'm going to get the hard lines replaced as well.

Re: Best brake fluid
You did not say what year.
Most master cylinders or filler caps have the brake fluid specs on them and owners manual also. If over 3 years or 50k on the bake fluid i would recommend a brake fluid flush for the system. Bake fluid draws moisture which rust and cause containment of inside parts. But some systems require a scan tool to do a total bleed operation.

Re: Best brake fluid
I tried to put new Russell SS brake hoses on my 2000 1500 LS ext cab and the fittings didn't fit.
I use Super Blue Racing Fluid and you can really tell when you have all of the old stuff out of the lines because the fluid is blue....the next time use Dot4 and you can see the color change back and know all of the old fluid has been flushed. |

Re: Best brake fluid
It's a 99 4.8 w/150k. I topped off the reservoir with Valvoline Syn Power DOT3/DOT4 fluid. It wasn't empty, but it was below the min mark. When the repair is done I'll get them to drain flush and fill the system even though it was done last year (6k miles ago). Good idea about the off-color fluid. I guess when you flush it again you'll have to use a different fluid (unless they make red/clear)

Re: Best brake fluid
What would be the proper method of getting rid of the old fluid from your system on a 99 Silverado and 2000 S-10 Blazer ?

That's right...I used the Super Blue because it's as good as the regular fluid and blue and next time I'll switch back for the color change. |
