7.3 L Cam position sensor
There seems to be a problem with the cam position sensor going out on 2000 & 2001 7.3L diesels. Mine went out at 83K, and my friends, both who have 01's have each have to replace theirs twice..at 43K and 79K. The Ford dealer here says that it keeps them busy.
By the way it is a very easy fix..can be done on the side of the road with a 10mm socket and some vaseline. It is located on the passenger side just to the left of the crankshaft pulley. You can reach it from under the passenger side front. Symptoms of it going bad are: the truck just dies and the check engine light lights. Sometimes it will start back up and let you get a few more miles down the road before cutting off again. Then it won't start again. If you have a power chip it will not give off a code. |

Re: 7.3 L Cam position sensor
at my dealership it is also very common - but hey they all have problems - at least this is a fairly cheap and easy repair.

Re: 7.3 L Cam position sensor
I just got a letter yesterday from FoMoCo about the Cam position sensor. They are replacing them in 97 to 03's with the 7.3. So take it to them and they will replace them. If you have had it done you might get them to pay for it. The service recall # is 07S57.

Re: 7.3 L Cam position sensor
Bottom line,
If you have a 7.3 PS keep a spare CPS in the glove box. They are notirious for going out |

Re: 7.3 L Cam position sensor
I've got a 2000 F-350 with 311,000 miles on it with no CMP sensor problem. But I have always carried a spare.
