C280 aftermarket headunit?

my friend has a 1996 mercades C280 with the factory bose amplfier. he really wants to put in an aftermarket radio but everyone we talk to tells us something different about how to take care of the stock amplifier and speakers. we want to keep them intact. Can anyone shed some light on the subject for me?
