01 Wrangler Gets a little hot
01 Wrangler 4.0 5 speed. 85k. Runs at a constant 208-211 degrees by the gauge which doesnt seem too bad but I every once in awhile I get a whif of anti-freeze. Its coming from somewhere and I cant find it. Nothings leaking on the ground and it doesnt appear that I am losing coolant. Just bought the thing a couple weeks ago so obviously I dont know it very well.
Seem normal to you guys? Ive done a search and some say its a cracked radiator. I do see a hint of green on the very top of it but its dry. Could be it I spose. Whats normal gauge temperature? Thanks in advance. Pilot |

Re: 01 Wrangler Gets a little hot
Not exactly sure what that could be. I have a 97 and the Thermo is at 195.

Wrangler radiators have a plastic top on them. Theres a seam that runs around the top. That seam is notorious for leaking, excactly where you describe the "greenish" color. Coolant wont leak badly from there and it wont leak unless the Jeep is running and then maybe only at higher RPMs (more pressure in the system) so it happens while you are driving and splatters around the engine compartment then evaporates when you stop. The cure for this is to either replace the radiator with an aftermarket one, (preferably all metal) or as a stop gap, you can use a pair of pliers and gently pinch the clips tighter that secure the top of radiator. |

Re: 01 Wrangler Gets a little hot
Not only will the tanks leak at the seems but the tanks can also develop cracks in them. I chased that problem on mine for a while. Since it didn't just pour out coolant, and didn't really run hot I just kept a good eye on the cooling system. After a few months I noticed a bulge in the radiator tank that had a hairline crack in it. My replacement radiator has metal tanks, I didn't have to specify thats just the way it came in. It wasn't really that expensive either, I only paid $159 for it at my local radiator shop. I tried Autozone and O'Reilly Auto Parts, they were both at least double waht I paid for it.
