Unhappy '92 Camry: Several lights out

I recently bought a 1992 Camry DLX with 180k miles. So far the car has been great for the $2500 I paid. Here's the problem:
  1. The back-up lights on the trunk are out and new bulbs haven't fixed them.
  2. License plate lights are also out.
  3. The shift-lock button the trans-console does nothing. (ECT Power and O/D off buttons work fine)
  4. And the light under the gear shifter illuminating the trans position is also out.
Could all these items be related?

I've checked the GUAGE fuse (10A) and verified it is good. I will be checking the wire harness in the truck today to troubleshoot the backup lights.

Any thoughts?

Re: '92 Camry: Several lights out

Numbers 1 and 2 could be related. You are correct in checking for those 2 problems with the loom of wires in the trunk located by the driver's side trunk hinge. The wires in that loom have a tendancy to frey and break from all the flexing they are exposed to when the trunk is constantly opened and closed. Open up that loom of wires and look for freyed or broken wires. Repair as necesary. I can't help with number 3 but number 4 is probably just a burned out bulb under the consul. You can do a search on this forum for instructions on how to get to it and replace it. You can also download the generation 3 Toyota factory service manual stickied at the top of this forum for some help. Here's the link:

#1, 2 & 4 are fixed. How can I tell if the shift-lock is actually working?

Re: '92 Camry: Several lights out

press the button and see if you can shift it out of park without having the brake pressed.

Or...troubleshoot using this excerpt from the Factory Service Manual at the top of the forum: http://www.turboninjas.com/camry/ax1.pdf Open it then scroll to page 36,37,38.

What fixed 1,2, and 4?
