Studio27's 2007 McLaren MP4-22 pics

Hello,

I got my McLaren from HLJ today and I took some pics.

The usual Studio27's package:

Instructions. There is also a nice paper with some advice and instructions for people who have never worked in a multimedia kit.

Decals. Red parts from the livery look like so orange to me, I would say they are a match for old Marlboro McLaren fluo red, instead of a good choice for this year's car. Perhaps it's just my appreciation.

Mercedes Benz logo comes in very nice chrome decal. I wasn't able to get this effect with the camera.

The body. I didn't spent a lot of time checking it but looks well proportioned to me.

Small problem with the body. Many panel lines need to be... softened? smoothed down? I think that these irregular lines will be shown as neon lights by any chrome paint we use to paint the body.

Wheels. Tires look really fantastic.

PE parts and resin part for the seat.

Finally, the rest of the parts.

Regards

Is it just me or does it look like it's leaning a little bit? The horizon looks pretty level. The main keel looks like it has a slight "wave" as well. Kinda like a broken nose that healed crooked.

The big question is: what number are you building? #1 or #2?

Nice looking kit generally, but I think for the money they cost the panel lines should be perfect. It's the only area that disappoints.

Hi,

I agree with Steve, looking at the photos the kit makes a great impression, however the panel lines tear it down.

I think you cannot just use an Xacto-blade to smooth them, because then the gap gets too wide and youŽll end up with panel lines looking like those on the Revell Audi R10.

Re: Studio27's 2007 McLaren MP4-22 pics

I have four multi-media kits now, and I'd say that the panel lines shown here are reasonable for this type of kit. Certainly not up to the standard of the plastic kits we all enjoy, but with resin I think we always must make concessions.

I have the MP4/21 kit, and the panel lines are similar (in fact the overall cars are near identical), and although there are obvious "dodgy bits" in the kit I would have paid an arm and a leg for it (and I did). I suppose us fans of the newer F1 cars just can't help ourselves and fork out the big $$$ to build the cars we really like!

So Cold Fire, what paint are you going to use for this kit?
You can actually buy the exact paint that McLaren use, although even buying minimum quantities it's still very expensive.
Thanks for the pics, and make sure to post a progress thread!!!

Re: Studio27's 2007 McLaren MP4-22 pics

"Best solution" would be to re - do again all that panel lines. Many aviation modellers usually do that in kits that come with panel lines raised, instead of engraved in the plastic. It's a lot of job but I think that it would be worth it. Also I think that engraving and working with resin is easier in this aspect that working on plastic. Anyway it will be a headache, I do think that the problem is not fixing the lines, the problem is that they must be perfectly finished or chrome will show any mistake, it doesn't matter how small it could be.

Anyway the day I fix those lines Tamiya will announce they are producing this car, so this could be a bad business

Mark, I will use the chrome paint that Studio27 has released. I purchased it the first time that Hiroboy stored them. After that Studio27 restricted this paint to japanese market. I was lucky, the MP4-21 they painted with this paint looked impressive.

Regards.

Re: Studio27's 2007 McLaren MP4-22 pics

so funny to see that on the 2 MClaren I have, 19 and 20, I have the same panel lines problems....
The eyres fit better with the wheels, now like on the F2007, it's not as bad as before, s that's a good point to have a "linear tyre".
The red decals looks good to me , dayglo like.

Re: Studio27's 2007 McLaren MP4-22 pics

The kit reminded me of old Matchbox airplane kits. I used to fill the canals with superglue, and re-scribed all panel lines. Basic plastic putty won't stick to the body, so it'll probably chip, so I recommend superglue.

Re: Studio27's 2007 McLaren MP4-22 pics

thanks for the review, my kit is on the way and hopefully arrives this week.

It's not Modelfactory Hiro quality, the panel lines require a lot of work but apart from that it's looks like nice kit. How are the white metal parts?
But does anybody know which version/GP that kit represents... I think it's either one of the first races or pre-season...?

About the paint, Hiroboy has a special chrome for the F1 Mclaren's anyone tried that? CLICK

By the way Studio27 annouced yesterday that they release a Canada/USA GP version of the kit which I want so bad (Hamilton's first GP win) !

Re: Studio27's 2007 McLaren MP4-22 pics

Panel lines are so "zig-zag" since (probably) they used a rapid prototyping device, and they printed also panel lines. Than they smoothened down the body shell but panel lines kept the memory of those layer's technique. If my butt was in the S27 seat I would prototyping the body w/out lines, smooth out and then use a robotic 3d CNC mill (every one that cast or warmform plastic have some, and they're dozens only in my city) to etch panel lines.

I see no other way than fill with CA and rescribe, Hiro's stuff I have in hand is from another planet.

Re: Studio27's 2007 McLaren MP4-22 pics

I just ordered Ferrari F2007 and I hope so that I will be more luck with panel lines on it.
Like Gio said, Hiro kits are much better but and and much expensier.

Re: Studio27's 2007 McLaren MP4-22 pics

If you start building the F2007, be careful with the rear wing placement. The parts are placed in 2 different ways in 2 pictures. One is too near the suspensions arms, the other one is too far. I'll post some pics of the finished model this week end I think and I'll explain

Well judging by the one MFH kit I have (namely the Aston Martin DBR9) I'd have to say it IS very much MFH quality as regards the panel lines - utterly unacceptable. The French (LMM, P24, Renaissance) manage to cast superb 1/24th scale bodies and panel lines in resin. The Japanese, for all their technology, seem not to be bothered most of the time.
