Bank Repo Ignition

Sup all,

I bought a sweet 98 Blazer with Vortec from a Bank. Only problem with it is that when they went and took it (No Keys).

They took it out to some lock smith who managed to make a key for it after messing with the cylinder. He probably left the old cylinder in it because of passlock (I could be wrong about this?). He did however screw up the tumblers.

Anyway, they key isn’t perfect and you have to know exactly how to use it to start it. It’s personally not too aggravating (I already had walmart make me a copy) but somehow he managed to trip the Air bag light on (It’s on constantly). Should I concern myself with this? And is it economically a good Idea to replace the Ignition Cylinder?

Also, how much trouble and cost would it be for me to find a keyless entry remote and have it work?

I already have the ball joints replaced, the idler, pinion, brakes and a new caliper. So I do have some time and money wrapped up in this but I knew what I was getting for my bid. The tranny, engine and body are in Great condition (95K).

However someone managed to find a belt that fits without the Air conditioning pulley being used (Froze Up). Does anyone know if any of the 4.3 vortecs that year came without AC? I want to get another so I have it until I replace the AC mechanics next spring.

Well I know I’ve asked allot and thanks ahead of time...

Thanks,

Wade….

Re: Bank Repo Ignition

Only thing I can help with is the keyless remote. You can get them on ebay for roughly 20 bucks give or take, really not that much of a hassle and much cheaper than getting it through a dealer.

Welcome to the Forum. This dash light usually means the system is disconnected or not working. Maybe your Locksmith failed to put the fuse or plug the wire back in after doing his work. If the fuse is in and all other connections are good, You might try disconnecting the battery for a few minutes to see if the Airbag code resets itself.

Thanks for the welcome Rick!

I thought about resetting the light with a battery disconnect but then remembered Id have to get the radio scanned because I think this year of Delco’s lock up on loss of battery power (again not sure of)???

I never met the locksmith (The bank had they key made). The fuse is in but I was thinking he probably pulled the steering wheel and removed the fuse first. Isn’t there a wire under the wheel that if it was left disconnected the light would come on? Like I said, don’t know the locksmith personally but I hear the one who did my Blazer is a horrible one 'I have a sister in-law that works at the bank and she found that out for me’. In fact, she said it might have been just a garage that got a key to work. Guess it was a hurry slop job so the bank could quickly resell.

I don’t think I can just replace the new lock cylinder can I? Isn’t there like a chip or something that has to match the cylinder so it will start (Using PASSLOCK)?

Also, thanks to the one who said about the aftermarket remotes, I'll have to look into it.

Re: Bank Repo Ignition

I think you're right about the radio and I know there is a wire that can be disconnected as well. Look around the base of the steering column.

Re: Bank Repo Ignition

The radio will lock up if the anti-theft is set on it. I can't remember how to tell - my factory unit has been out for way to long. Use the search, the answer is on here somewhere.
Our keys aren't "chiped" the pass lock just requires the key to be in the ignition. You'll need a passlock bypass for the remote start to work. I had a shop do the whole thing for $200.
