91 gmc 6.2l diesel starter question

Hi all, my truck has 62k and the starter just bit the dust. while taking out the old unit I noticed a starter bolt missing and assumed it got loose & rattled out being a diesel and all. After putting the new unit in and getting another bolt I notice that there is a piece still stuck down in the hole. Is an easy out the best option for this or should I try to drill the whole thing out carefully? I appreciate your help.

I would definitely recommend using an easy out. I don't know how much experience you have with that, but you have to drill dead center and very straight. I hope you are better with them than I am. Another option would be to drill it out completely and use an oversized bolt if you have the necessary tools.

Have you tried to see if you can get a screw driver or something up in there that might grab and twist it out? I would try drilling it out as my last option. Thats not a good place to have a problem when drilling.
