Time for new belts?

I know im probably going to need new belts soon, and for them to be adjusted because of this as well, but when i first start up the car, and press on the gas i hear a loud squeak, only when i press the gas though, i have to let off it a few times for it to stop.

Re: Time for new belts?

Just try tightening them... it's usualy the altenator belt that squeaks when loose, but it could be others.

It don't matter how tight you make a hard bet, it will fail. The harder you make it, the less time it has.You have a hard belt!

Re: Time for new belts?

Agreed, but it's not necesaraly a hard belt. You can have a new, rubberey one and if it's loose, it will squeal. I'm not eliminating the option, and odds are the belt is old and could use replacement, but it it's loose it needs tightening regardless.

Re: Time for new belts?

Check all of them! Don't do one first, do all at the same time! Yes, alternator belts can squeak, but you're more likely to get a squeak from a power steering belt or an A/C compressor belt.

I've had A/C compressor belts loose enough to be able to work them the pulley without looseining then without any squeal. I've only found the altenator belts to squeal most often when revving the engine due to the fact that it's a small pulley trying to turn the heavy internal parts of the altenator. I do agree with silicon that you should check all belts, but I was just making a point when you open your hood, check the altenator one and go from there to the others (A/C Comressor, PWR steering which can often squeal while turning, and even the A.I.R. Pump)
