How to Troubleshoot Cruise Control on a 1997
My Cruse control quit working. The "Cruse" light on the dash lights up but the cruse quit working.
How do I go about troubleshooting a Cruse Control? Thank you, Chris. |

Re: How to Troubleshoot Cruise Control on a 1997
If the "CRUISE" indicator illuminates on the I/P, the cruise control electronics package thinks the system is engaged. That means that all teh logical conditions to engage cruise are satisfied, and the system shoudl be working.
I'd check the cable at the throttle lever/belcrank, and the latch solenoid in the cruise servo itself to make sure they are connected and functioning.

I thought for sure with the advice I've recived here at these forums this would be an easy one.
Nobody knows how to troubleshoot a Cruse Control? |

I would think it is servo replacement time!.

How would I go about testing to make sure I don't buy a servo and have it not be the problem?

![]() Look as simple as a cruise control problem may seem or as frustrating they can be difficult to properly troubleshoot without proper diagnostics equipment like a Tech II scan tool and proper documentation. Also, a DMM would help to check voltages and wiring to the cruise control module. So to start do you have a GM FSM (Factory Service Manual) for your year LeSabre? Highly recommended. Do you have any other problems like the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) circuits or any DTCs stored in the PCM module or any other ongoing problem not mentioned? Some DTCs will disable or inhibit cruise control.

Re: How to Troubleshoot Cruise Control on a 1997
Come to think of it, what happened first was my TPS went out. Without it, the cruse didn't work. When I got it fixed, the cruse worked again.
Right now I have trouble with the VATS in the ignition cylinder. I think, from what I can remember the curse went out before the VATS Reader in the ignition. I also got a p0170 code (this is way after the cruse quit) last week. I went straight to the store and had the code removed and haven't got it back yet. The guy at the store said it was an 02 Sensor. Does this help any? I remember reading somewhere (of course before it applied to me) about trouble shooting cruse by checking current on something. Then you hit the breaks so it disengages cruse. The power goes out at this and will tell you if it's good up to the whatever part it was. Not sure of the details. Sounded pretty easy. Do you know anything about this? Thank you, Chris. |

Re: How to Troubleshoot Cruise Control on a 1997
I can look up shop manuals online at my library. When I do, it says there is two different types of Cruse Controls used. Why doesn't it tell me what I have? It is supposed to be for my car.
This is stupid. A shop manual for the year I have that doesn't know what type of cruse control I have. |
