Strange radio behavior 2002 Passat

After my alternator was replaced by a local shop, the radio began to act strangely.

1. The radio no longer comes on when the car is started after being off for a few minutes.
2. When the radio comes on after turning it on it is on the FM radio, no matter what the last mode was (CD, Tape, etc.)
3. The volume level is at a high level when the radio is turned on.

The local shop was unable to reprogram the radio even though they have the correct software to do so (they say). They suggest I take it to a dealer.

Is there a way to reset the radio to the factory defaults?
