99 Civic Si

Hey,
I'm looking at buying a used 99 civic Si and I went to have it looked over at a garage yesterday. The only problem they found was some oil seeping from the tranny. They thought it might be coming from between the case halves. Any ideas how serious this would be, what I should do, or what would fix it and it's cost?

hmm....let's see here, you were at a shop having a car looked over, and while you're at the shop with professional people that do this kind of stuff for a living, you didn't ask about it?

yeah i have to go with kicker on this one, how come you didnt ask them there. thats weird that the tranny is leaking oil like that, only a few year old car. also what kind of mechanic is this, i think its coming from here, WHAT if i were you i would not take it to that place again. did they even raise the car up on a hoist thingy ? that mechanic is stupid, it only takes 5 min to jack up the car and check to see where its coming from.

if its coming from in between the case halves then you will need to take the tranny out of the car, take the tranny apart, and replace the gasket that goes between the halves. simple

if its not dripping out that much then its ok for now but i would get it replaced as soon as possible. also you need to keep chekcing the oil level in the tranny to make sure its filled up.

its gonna be pretty expensive, i would tell the owner then have him subtract how much its gonna cost you to get it fixed, or have the owner fix it, but make sure he sells you it at the same price

the shop i was at said it was very possible for it to b a gasket problem like you mentioned, but they aren't transmition specialist so they weren't going to drop the tranny out and check for sure. So they recommened I get a tanny shop to look at it and see what they say. I just wanted to see if anyone else had heard of this and how much it cost them to fix it.

Its a bad gasket, just dropped the engine and tranny into a 99 Civic yesterday and had the same problem..

cool thanks, i figured it was the gasket but wanted to be sure. Anyone have any idea how much i should expect that to cost?

The gasket shouldnt cost more than a few bucks, but the labor is what will cost a lil bit, probably 2-300 after said and done.

As far as the brand of gasket? I'm not sure of that, but don't buy the cheapest one, and don't buy the most expensive one, stay in between and you will be alright...

wait, of all the tranmissions I've taken off there is no gasket between the tranny and the block! If it is leaking from there, the only think I could suggest would be to remove the tranny, and put some hondabond around it and put it back together.

yeah, thanks buddy. Hondabond HT is a liquid silicon "gasket" which I figured out slightly prior to reading your post. But it's good to have someone confirm that searcing for an actual gasket would be like chasing a ghost.

i'd take it to another mechanic that you trust and let him look it over, i know you probably really want the car, but dont get fucked over like i did
