1995 Eclipse OBD II Compliant?

Can anyone tell me if a 1995 Eclipse 2.0 non-turbo is OBD II compliant? I called the local dealer and they were useless!

Re: 1995 Eclipse OBD II Compliant?

Basically "compliance" just means it will work to retrieve the codes. So you are saying it will only work with an OBD I?

Re: 1995 Eclipse OBD II Compliant?

Are you just trying to use an OBD2 scanner or something to see cel codes. I dont think you would be able to use something for OBD2, it may work just not perfectly.

Re: 1995 Eclipse OBD II Compliant?

I believe the 95s are OBDII compatible. They use the same ECU configuration as the 96-99s.

Is the ECU the same thing as the PCM? I checked the manual and can't find anything about the ECU.

Re: 1995 Eclipse OBD II Compliant?

I haven't used anything to read the codes yet. I'm trying to find out which scanner it takes. So far all I have used are the check engine flash codes but they don't make any sense. For a while I was getting 1-2-4-5-5 and then I was getting 1-2-5-5. I can't find anything that tells me what they mean. Those numbers don't show up in any code lists I can find.

Re: 1995 Eclipse OBD II Compliant?

2g Eclipses are OBD-II. Although the government mandate wasn't until 1996, Mitsubishi implemented the OBD-II standard in all 2g cars. Since you are N/T, you should be able to get the key dance to work, which is I'm guess what you are trying to do. Try it again and see if you can get a more consistent reading from the ECU.

My guess is that the code is 12 - 55.

12 is the fault code indicating a power failure to the ECU and 55 signals the end of codes. So it looks like you are just being notified that the PCM lost power. Did you disconnect the battery while working on something before you got the codes?

Re: 1995 Eclipse OBD II Compliant?

Yes, I did have the negitive cable to the battery disconnected. It sounds as though my sensors and the pcm are good in that case. I get spark and gas but no fire. Timing belt maybe? By the way thanks for your help. I really appreciate it.

Re: 1995 Eclipse OBD II Compliant?

If you can get it to autozone they can scan it for you. You can also try other parts stores, a lot of the time they will rent their scanners out to people.

Re: 1995 Eclipse OBD II Compliant?

As for your spark problem, I really can't help you. I know nothing about the N/T's. Sorry.

Re: 1995 Eclipse OBD II Compliant?

Hey Spyder I found the problem. Broken timing belt. It looks like a real pain in the ass but at least I found out why it won't fire. Thanks again for all the help.

Re: 1995 Eclipse OBD II Compliant?

That sucks. You may have internal damage to the engine. Bent valves, broken piston heads... can be quite extensive. Only way to find out is to rip the head off, check it all out, and fix what needs it. It's a pain in the ass, and if you've never done this before, take it to a shop.

Re: 1995 Eclipse OBD II Compliant?

Apparently the car was sitting still at idle when it stalled. Of course then it wouldn't restart. I'm hoping that may have saved it or is that wishful thinking? Also, once I have the timing belt removed if I can rotate the cams 360 by hand the valves should be O.K. right?
