I need to change my Escort's fuel pump and if anybody has any tips I'd be very grateful for them. Thanks in advance.

Re: 91 Ford Escort Fuel Pump
On my 92 escort wagon you unclip the rear seat cushion (what you sit on) and can access the pump from there. The seat has clips on the front bottom edge, about 13 inches in from each side of the car. The manual says to 'depress' the clips to release the seat.
You should always replace the fuel filter when you put in a new pump - unless its been recently replaced. The fuel filter on mine is on the firewall a little below the brake booster and behind the engine intake. I think you need a plastic tool to spread the clips on the filter (top & bottom) so the filter can slide out of the fuel lines. I -think- they are the same type of tool used for disconnecting a.c. hose connections, and the 2 fuel lines at the fuel rail. |

Re: 91 Ford Escort Fuel Pump
I have replaced the fuel pump twice on my 98 escort. Once the seat is off, you just have to get the locking ring off, which can be a pain. Use a hammer and a flathead screwdriver. Then it should be simple.
It might be different on a 91. |

Re: 91 Ford Escort Fuel Pump
Don't forget to let the pressure out of the fuel lines before taking the pump out. Easiest way is to press the fuel shutoff button in the trunk, then start the car and let it idle and die out.

Re: 91 Ford Escort Fuel Pump
same as the 90, the hardest part is popping the clips to get the rear seat out
![]() tap off the lockring and off it comes. It's a better design than my full size dodge van where I have to drop the tank -- all 35 gals of it ( which is why I have the 01 escort, if I had to drive the van all the time I'd be broke) |
