Blower Motor problem

I am having problems with my blower motor. My a/c will work for about a minute then it dies. If you turn it off for a few minutes then turn it on again it will work again for a minute or so. The first 2 speed positions have not worked in a year or so. Does anyone know what could be causing this. I think it may be the blower motor but I am not sure. Does anyone know where the blower motor is located and how to change it. Thanks

Re: Blower Moter problem

Welcome to the Alero forum...

It sounds like you may have two separate problems.

Your air conditioning working only for a couple of minutes is likely a problem specific to your air conditioning system and is unrelated to the blower problem. I can't say what the exact problem would be with your A/C, but likely the system is low on refrigerant (which indicates a leak in the system that will have to be repaired before adding more) or you have an expansion valve problem. Either way, a repair shop or dealer is probably your best bet to have it checked out.

The blower motor problem is most likely the blower motor resistor. This isn't really hard to replace and is relatively inexpensive. There are several threads in the Alero forum relating to this problem, some of which describe step by step how to replace the resistor. Basically, the resistor is located under the dash behind the glove box.

Re: Blower Moter problem

Thank you. I'm not sure if I phrased myself correctly. The motor just seems to die and stop blowing. I believe the air conditioner is still working. It doesn't matter if the air conditioner is on or if I am just using the vents. It will blow cool air from outside for a minute or so and then still stop and then start again. Do you still think it is the resistor or do you think it is the blower motor itself. Thank you once again.

Re: Blower Moter problem

I would definitely start with the resistor, as it sounds exactly like what mine and numerous others have done in the past with the first two speeds not working. The Alero has had a history of problems with the original blower motor resistor and GM introduced an "upgraded" resistor several years ago to address the problem. I believe it's the topic of one of their Technical Service Bulletins. It's also the least expensive and least labor intensive of the two options.
