Smoke

Was driving down a two-lane country road the other day with the cruise on 60... Went to pass a slower moving vehicle and when I punched it, got a big puff of black smoke from the tailpipe... I noticed it through the rearview mirror. I've also noticed recently that the chrome exhaust tip has alot of soot on it. Is this normal? I only ask because the vehicle is a brand new 07 Malibu Maxx LT V6 with only 900 miles on it. The car has been babied in its short life so far and the break-in period was strictly followed. All fluids are good, no codes and the car runs great. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Smoke

Well, The black smoke is normal when you press down hard on the gas pedal what it cause is you over rich too much gas in the cylinder that it does not have time to burn it complete, as for the other detail Well, it too early to be doing that. it only happends when your spark plugs are no longer good

Re: Smoke

Thanks for the reply... You would think that with all the computer controlled stuff under the hood these days, this burning rich issue wouldn't happen. I'll take it to the dealer and have them check it all out... Thank goodness for the 5 Year/100,000 warranty!

I have 30K on my o4 Malibu with the 3.5 and I can wipe the inside of my tail pipe and it is clean. My neighbors 04 also, clean like a new pipe off the shelf.
