'96 tahoe wont fire. cant find answer...

it fired up fine this morning, drove about 5 miles, filled up with 93. drove another 25 miles. shut it off for a couple hours. fired it back up, drove 100 yards and it just died. It has power, I can hear the fuel pump when you turn the key on. It has spark, and it did fire off starter fluid, but not on its own. need help...

Welcome to AF, get a fuel pressure tester on the rail, sounds like a bad pump, look for 60-65 psi if this is Vortec.

Re: '96 tahoe wont fire. cant find answer...

I just replaced the fuel pump end of last summer. someone told me to check/replace the fuel filter and someone else told me to check the fuel injector wires??? Im gonna run to advance and check on the filter and a fuel line pressure gauge.

Re: '96 tahoe wont fire. cant find answer...

ok, replaced fuel filter. pressure tested the fuel line and it only pushed about 16 lbs. I know its supposed to be 60-65. when I pulled the old fuel filter off, I unbolted the tank side first and drained the tank side of the filter, there was some water in the line. didn't catch the line from the tank. but if ya'll think I should see what that looks like I can undo it and see. I think it might be the fuel pump though, although it was replaced like....last september maybe? and I think it was a napa pump. anymore advice is greatly appreciated. thanks in advance!

Bunk: If you think it's water in the tank, you have to ask yourself if this problem started just after you filled up. If it did then you're on to fixing it.

If you think it's the pump then I have a story for you. A good friend went to NAPA to check prices for his wife's '96 Tahoe. He gave them all the info they asked for and they came up with 3 different part numbers for fuel pumps!!!

There have been lots of post here about fuel pumps and the bottom line seems to be to go with an AC-Delco pump. They go by VIN #'s and it's the best way to go to get the right pump for your vehicle.

Search the web for an AC-Delco store near you or go to this web site and give them your VIN for a good OEM replacment pump.

Hope this helps............Stickman

Thanks for posting back how it went and what you found.
Not many do. It makes our day when someone does.
Good choice on the AC Delco pump.
Glad you got it going
