Tranny Question

I have a 2004, 1500 with the 5.3 flex fuel, 4WD with 48,000 miles. I want to change the tranny filter and fluid.
2 questions, 1. how do you determine which tranny you have? is it in the VIN code somewhere? 4L60E (M30) or 4L80E.
2. how much tranny fluid does it take? Looked thru the owners manual and could not find the capapcity for the tranny anywhere.

Thanks for your help!!!

Paul

It is not in the VIN; however, it should be on the SPID sticker (glovebox ???). The shape of the pan will also tell your. The 4L60E pan is very square.

On my 2000 Yukon, it take 4 to 5 qts after replacing the tranny filter. I usually put 4 in, warm it up and top it off.

Re: Tranny Question

Look in the glove box and there should be a sticker with lots of letters and numbers. If you see one that says M30 its a 4l60e.

Re: Tranny Question

your vehicle being a 1500 will have the 4l60 tranny ..with the deep pan m30 you will need 5quarts of dexronVI....do not use dexron III....obsolete fluid !

the deep pan is about 1.5 inches high...you will need the correct filter as the deep pan has a different filter...

last I checked NAPA was the only store that had the correct tranny filters in my area that matched the oem GM filter exactly,,in every way..

some of these other filters are not designed the same ,,but will still work..

napa gm deep pan filter kit 1-8567.....pan gasket for any 4l60 tranny 1-7381 rubber [reuaseable] so far working on 4X....torque to 7ft lbs...I used a 1/4 inch rachet torque wrench..never leaks holds screws/gasket in place when positioning pan to assemble.. total cost 30.oo approx..

dealer wants 55.oo just for the same filter.
