2000 Malibu Motor Mount
I was driving over some train tracks and a very loud vibrating noise was SCREAMING. I pulled over immediately and looked under the hood. The passanger side motor mount was broken and the pully was grinding on the broken mount.
The hydraulic part of the motor mount is perfectly intact. It is the aluminum bracket that bolts from the motor mount to the engine that is broken. Now to the question, Can this part be ordered instead of having to buy a complete hydraulic motor mount? And, even if I were to purchase this hydraulic motor mount, will this broken bracket be incluced? I've replaced the water pump and belt once but can't quite remember how the motor mount is put together. Any tips/hints would be much appreciated! Sean |

Sean, I went thru this about a year and a half ago, and yes, the piece that broke can be ordered seperately. I also had the bolts brake off inside, where the timing chain is located. What a pain that was to fix.
I will see if I have the part numbers and stuff from when my neighbor fixed mine. He is a mechanic, and got the parts for me, and fixed it for me. |

Hey, thanks for the help but I have already fixed it.
It turned out that the two rear bolts had broken off in the motor as well... After a week of trying to find the right tools (borrowing them) I finally backed the broken bolts out with a 90 degree drill and a couple of left handed bits. As for the part, I paid 27 at a salvage yard for the part to be welded (which failed immediately) and then was replaced with a salvage part. Come to find out, the part brand new from GM was less than 30 with all 4 bolts! I appreciate your help! On another topic, my tranny seems to be making a very strange grinding type of noise (maybe just a vibration?) when in neutral and park. I have changed half of the fluid and filter about this time last year too. I was wondering if the motor "sagging" without a motor mount to brace the engine tweaked something in the tranny. --dont worry, I didn't attempt to drive it while the mount was broken. I was just wondering if this is something to worry about or was a common side effect of the broken mount. Afterall, the noise didn't start until after I fixed the motor mount situation. Well, like you said that part "New" is way cheper in the auto delear anyways the grinding noise in the tranny well i had it but the tranny mech never told what it was anyways by the way does it do it in the driver side or passager

Its not necessarly coming from either side. Its more underneath it sounds like. It makes what sounds like a really heavy vibration sound.
I've figured out that if when I'm parking if I put use the parking break before I put it in "park" it makes the noise. But, when I let the weight of the car rest on the tranny in park it doesn't make the noise. This is why I figure it could be the tranny. |

The same thing just happend to me. The engine is leaning on the power steering pump pully, and the 2 bolts are broken off in the timing chine cover with the broken motor mount bracket. My question is did you have to lift the engine out of the car, and if not how did you do it? Thanks Joe |

No, you don't have to lift the motor out. Can you reach the broken bolts, or are they inside that cover, with the timing chain? I had my neighbor do my car, and he jacked the engine up and was able to take everything off to get to the timing belt. If I recall, the whole job, with changing the plugs and new O2 sensor was around $150. Of course he charged very little for his time, and got parts at cost. It is a very timely job, but if you are careful, anyone can really do the job.
Did it scare the crap out of ya when it happened? Were you driving? I'll help you out as much as possible. I may still have the parts boxes in my basement, if you need replacement part numbers! |

What I did was unbolt the actual hydraulic motor mount from the frame and jack up the motor from the oil pan. (against GM's recommendation) If you do this just make sure that you have a large enough surface area in contact with the pan. Also, when you jack it up make sure that you keep an eye on the engine's height. When it stops moving and you keep jacking = trouble.
I took off the broken bracket and rented a right angle drill. Then, i went to lowes and bought a set of left handed drill bits to back out the bolts. (and alot of wd40) A set of easy outs was my next option if the bolts were seized. The clearance was very very tight in between where you need to drill and the frame. Anyway, this was my process. I just used a center drill with the right angle drill. It wasn't very sucessful though. It mainly roughed it up just enough for the left handed drill bit to catch right. Luckly, the bolt wasn't seized. The night before I soaked it a couple times with some penetrant.

Well i did it, since i could not see the broken bolts in the cover i went to hardware store and looked for any round
metal that fit in the hole,to use to center the hole, even with your eyes closed it was dead center i drilled it with a small bit 1/8, then used a small easy out by hand and the bolts came out. Thank for all your help. i [ |
