Question engine swap question (this has nothing to do with a ford v8)

ok, i know all of you got really pissed when that one guy said he was gonna put a v8 in an rx7. i know how painful that sounds, my brother recomennded it 2 weeks before he crashed my turbo 2....
BUT!...do you think an rb25dett or rb26dett could fit in the rx7. be gentle with your answers, its only a hypothetical question.

the nissan engines i'm talking about would be from GT-S skylines, not gt-r's.

Off-hand I can't see any reason that you couldn't fit a RB into the RX-7 chassis... at least physically. You'd have to fabricate some custom mounts, obviously. Then there's also a matter of getting a tranny to line up.

I think the real nightmare will be with the wiring though.

My personal opinion... if you wanted to swap to a turbo piston engine, I'd stick with the SR20DET. The RB25 and 26 are nice engines, no doubt... I don't think the cost and work involved would be worth it. You wouldn't be able to keep the AWD or ATTESA system. The SR20 has tons of potential for power, and would cost considerably less... both for the engine, and for any parts you add or replace on it.

If you wanted to swap the RB just to be different, then go for it.

its still a pisst-on engine. Why not just get a rebuilt rotary? they're pretty cheap. Buy a TII with a blown motor, and then buy a TII motor and mount it in there. Or if you have a few extra dollars, get a cosmo 20b and put it in there, no body will TOUCH you. Those are my plans at least.

i can tell you it would be MUCH more expensive to try to fit an R26 in there than a Cosmo.

stick with the rex motor actually i found a used 20b cosmo motor from a place called alpine auto import here in md they want like 3500 for motor ecu and trans but right now im outa of a car and funds back to cylinders for now

I would say stick with the stock motor, but if you want to do a swap why not consider a 3 rotor, or heck the 13B-REW from the FD (3rd gen). But if you must, I don't think the RB26 will fit, but the SR20DET might fit. I also agree with the wiring being a nightmare, but if you did it...the payoff would definately be worth it!

The RB25det/RB26dett comes with clutch fan for radiator cooling and WILL NOT FIT unless the clutch fan is removed. Even if no clutch fan, there is no space to mount electric fan to replace clutch fan coz' the RB motor is too long. But the SR20det is no problem at all and there is enough gap for even a 2" thick elec-fan. Also, loads of custom jobs. Unless you are turning it to race car, then lots of electrical, wiring and mountings will be a PAIN. Another fact, the nissan motors will be heavier than the rotaries, so better think of the weight distribution plans.

Oh yes, by all means, swap in a 20B...

There are only a few of those runing aropund in the US, and none of them were even remotely affordable swaps ( a guy I work with had to have Peter Farrel complete his swap... he's into it for $35,000 at this point!).

And for those of you who think the V8 ruins handling (which it doesn't), the 20B weighs as much as a small block Chevy, but since it sits so far forward (including FMIC) the weight balance actually IS thrown off horribly! Instdead of a v8 engine sittin g low and behind teh front axle spreading the added mass between the front and rear, the 20B turbo adds all it's mass directly over the front wheels.

So 30 grand for V8 horsepower and worse handling. Yeah, THAT'S a solution...

The SR20DET weighs nearly as much as the Ford 5.0, sits taller, and costs more to make 300 hp. It's a great engine, but the swap, while cool, would not be as cost effective. the RB weighs MORE than the 5.0, is longer and sits farther forward, giving worse balance than te V8, at a higher cost for the same power.

The rotary these days does cost less to rebuild, but I was noticing the FAST rotary guys using the turbos and the Haltech engine management. As fast as they are, just that Haltech engine management system is over $2000, and that's just the start of the costs to get a 300-400 hp rotary.

A swap should be cost effective. it should provide economic or power benefits, unless you already have the engine to be swapped in hand.
