1998 Accord SE V6 AT No Speedo

Hi- Working on a '98 Accord 2dr 3.0L AT, 147,000 miles. The other day the speedometer and odometer along with the cruise control all quit working. I scanned it with my cheap scanner and it said vehicle speed sensor code. I can't remember the exact code number, but that was the description. Anyway, it seems that no one can get me a new sensor, I'm wondering what the next step is. I've heard that the power steering assist may be intertwined with the output speed sensor, but as of yet, have not tore into it. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I know this is simplistic but have you checked the wire harness? The speedo tach and odo all run off the center harness behind the guage face, maybe it got disconnected?

Thanks for the link. That is the only parts place I didn't check and I even called my local Oreilly after I got the part number off the autozone site and they still said it didn't cross. Thanks for the quick response. I'll reply as soon as I've got it fixed.

Well that could mean AZ's listing is wrong (NO! THAT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN )...

First time for everything...

Did you notice it said 2 required?

No idea....

Re: 1998 Accord SE V6 AT No Speedo

I ended up having my local Carquest get it for me, they said that very few franchises carry Wells sensors and that's why every other place didn't have listing. Autozone had to get it Fedexed and couldn't get it until monday or Tuesday, so I called Carquest and they had one in their warehouse and matched the price. Nice. Anyway, the 2 required is because there are 2 speed sensors on the tranny, one on the input side and one on the output side. You don't have to replace both, but there are 2 and they are exactly the same sensor. I'm installing it tonight and hopefully I'll be finishing up this thread soon after.

I've seen input speed reading referenced in OBDII codes but never occured to me they might be the same part #...never had to replace one...

Re: 1998 Accord SE V6 AT No Speedo

Removed old Output Speed Sensor, tested it against new one and it checked out fine. Scratched my head, opened a beer and noticed that the blue wire to said sensor was cut clean off and the green wire was stripped in a 1/16 inch section just outside the main harness. Took the plastic cover off the harness and repaired the wires and voila...speedo and cruise worked again. Have absolutely no idea how the wires got cut. The owner took the car to a Jiffy Lube or something and had the tranny fluid flushed, but that was 3000 miles ago, I'd have thought that she would've noticed the speedo not working before that. Thanks Jeff for the part number, I was ready to strangle the guy at Honda who said the car didn't have a speed sensor, even though I could find one on a parts fiche on the internet.

Re: 1998 Accord SE V6 AT No Speedo

00accord44 had the right idea...

I once read somewhere that 90% of seemingly sensor or ECM faults are actually bad grounds, wiring problems or bad connections...I tend to beleive that, it's held true in my shop experience... that's why I'll usually try tugging on connectors and verifying grounds before chasing demons...

Glad you spotted the problem...

One time I was working on a Nissan Sentra that had all hell breaking loose, multiple codes for MAF, Fuel trim, O2 sensor, etc, car would idle fine then fall on it's face and refuse to build revs when you hit the gas under load...but would rev fine in nuetral or park...

After they told me it started shortly after Jiffy Lube changed the oil and air filter, I started looking closely at the wiring around the airbox and MAF..thought they'd probably butchered something...

Couldn't find anything and was ready to let JL off the suspect list, but took the air filter out and looked into the duct...red shop towel in there, sucked up against the MAF screen ...

I'm betting there was leaves or something in the bottom of the airbox, and they shoved the rag in the duct to block it so they could blow the crap out with compressed air, then forgot to take the rag out ...always entertaining, trying to figure out what the last guy screwed up for ya'....

Sometimes I think I would probably have a lot more spare time if it weren't for everyone else. Thanks again.
