96 Rora, I think I killed it, Need expert advice - Alternator
Well, the other day my 96 started humming under the hood. Then the next morning the "check charge system" light came on. New the humming then was from the Alternator. Checked here for instructions. Seemed fairly straight forward because I have put two radiators in before, and half of the instructions was R&R the radiator.
Anyways. Started last night on the thing and got down to the last nut and bolt to come off. The two on the side of the Pulley. Now were down to the last nut to come off. The one underneath the pulley assembly. I squirm my hands down there with my 15mm wrench and start turning. The nut came loose easily, but still took a few minutes as there is not a whole lotta room to crank a wrench. Anyways, I finally get the last nut off and am ready to slide the alternator off of the bolt. Well the thing isn't moving. So I give it a few raps with a wrench. I see it wiggling. I figure that the thing is somewhat fronzen on there from years of heat, debris, etc.. Still not moving so I take a softball bat and give it about 5 raps and it drops to the frame... Success.. Not... When I reach down to move the alternator around I find out that I busted the alternator off the mount that bolt was bolted to. It appears to be attached to the engine block?? You don't understand the anger that is going through my mind right now. When I took a closer look at the bolt there was second nut screwed on. Someone, probably from another R&R job, screwed on another 15mm nut for some reason. So there I was screwin' around for 15 minutes taking off this nut, thinking that I am done, trying to pry off this alternator, and the stupid thing has for some reason another nut bolted to it. So I say all that to say this. Is 3 bolts going to be ok, or am I screwed? I mean the thing was barely moving with just one bolt on, will I be ok with 4. I know they put 4 on for a reason. But I really don't feel like having to buy another car when we really could use the cash for other things than a car payment. Just as a reminder the bolt that is bust is the lower pulley side bolt. I am just worried that there may be enought torque from the serp belt to wiggle the alternator enough to have it slip off. Expert advice is highly appreciated... Commence laughing....

wow,,how hard to you hit that thing to break the mount of the engine.i have not yet replaced the alternator on my 95' but there must be a way to replace the mount.can you see how it's attached to the motor ? if not i believe 3 bolts will probable be enough to hold the alernator in place.

I would say giving it a try with Three bolts. I think it will hold.

Yep I gave it a few good raps... But who wouldn't if you thought it was frozen onto the bolt and didn't know there was another nut holding it in place... The more I think about it the more I think that 3 will be ok.. Even with the one holding it on it wouldn't budge... So maybe I will give it a try... |
