Pass-Key II System

My 98 monte carlo is having trouble starting. I'm pretty sure my problem is the pass-key II system. I've read all the posts about splicing in a resistor. i know the VATS number of my key b/c i measured the resistance of my key. rather than splicing in a bypass resistor, can I install a new ignition lock switch? Does anybody have any suggestions??
