Brake Switch Interlock

2000 Towncar wouldn't come out of park this morning and the brake lights are out. Where is the interlock, whats a fair price on it and how hard is it to change. I was able to put it in "N" to start it and drive it but with the lights out, not good

There's a solenoid on the steering column that actually does the locking job however, the problem is most likely the (BOO) Brake On Off, aka Brake Light Switch.

Some folks report "the switch seems to be knocked out of place, I fixed it with two fingers" and others report "one wire was unplugged, it works fine now" while others report "the switch was replaced and all is well". ( the latter was probably done by a mechanic and cost a first born )

The switch is located inline with the brake pedal arm.

Re: Brake Switch Interlock

Sure enough, I see a loose wire but it is behind a plastic molded shield. Any idea how that comes out. I'm a pretty large guy and exploring under there is not pretty.

Sorry, I can't say for sure on your 2000 model.... you may want to find someone smaller to play with it..

I usually get my wife involved where I don't fit....

Re: Brake Switch Interlock

Is there any adjustment to the brake light switch. My 93 TC I have to push the brake as hard as I can before the Brake Lights come on. Also the park interlock does not work I have to start it nuetral.

It not adjustable, but it may have fallen loose from it's mount, or just plain defective. You'll have to get under there and have a good look.

Re: Brake Switch Interlock

There are a few different switches under there, on the brake pedal bracket. Most likely you need to replace one. I have some if you need any.

Can you start the car with the shift indicator between P and R ? It might be out of adjustment, easy fix. Or there might be something wrong with the neutral safety switch. I have some of those as well. [email protected]
