Interference motor or not?

Just purchased a '98 2.4L with 102,000 on it for my daughter. I would like to know if this is an interference motor a non-interference. Is there a recommendation on when the timing belt/chain should be changed?

Thanks for your answers....

Re: Interference motor or not?

Non, When the water pump goes bad most people change them then as they have the remove the timing change to do so. Water pumps go bad 80-100K miles or so. If yours still looks like stock, kill a weekend and do both of em for her car.

Re: Interference motor or not?

It has a timing chain. Mine is a '97 with 207k miles on it. It runs fine. I've had to replace the fuel pump inside the fuel tank recently and the catalytic converter a year or so ago. The exhaust pipe broke up where it bolts to the head. It had an accordian looking expansion section and corroded and busted off. The fuel pump problem was a long cranking time when the car had sat for a bit. It started well if it had recently been ran. It is my understanding that there is a check valve that goes bad and allows the pressure to bleed off when it is sitting. I use 10w30 synthetic oil and don't change it until I get 10k miles out of it. I just keep it topped off and I check it at fuel stops. 29mpg in the winter and 31-33mpg in the summer. It does not tick and runs smooth. I've heard a bunch of them that did tick with much fewer miles though.

Good luck and show your daughter where the dipstick is.
