Oil sending unit making check engine light come on?

I've got a 96 SW1 and I have to replace my oil sending unit because every couple of days I'll notice a puddle of oil under my car. So I get under there and investigate and so I traced to my oil sending unit. Anways....that's pretty much the only thing wrong with my car. But the service engine soon light is on....could that bad unit make the check engine light come on and stay on?

If oil dripped onto the oxygen sensor connector, that would set a check engine light.

Have it scanned for codes at Autozone or Schucks. Could be a totally unrelated problem.

Re: Oil sending unit making check engine light come on?

I wanna get it fixed to where it'll have at least $1,000 trade-in value and get something else. Something 5-speed of course. But dont know what. Haven't test drove anything yet but looking at a couple of things out there. What do y'all think about these:
2007 Honda Civic SI Sedan $24,139 loaded
2007 Mazda6 i Sport Model $20,850 loaded
2007 Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V $22,025 loaded
2007 Subaru Legacy 2.5i Special Edition $23,495 loaded
I'm having such a hard time thinking about which one I really wanna test drive where the dealerships around where I live are so scattered about it'll take a whole tank of gas just to drive to all the dealerships. Another thing, that Subaru Legacy I've also considered that in a wagon form too. And also that Mazda6 I've also considered a Mazdaspeed3 also. I can get one of them for about $24,850 loaded. But the thing I like about the Subaru Legacy is it's AWD and I'm real big on the handling of the car a little bit more than the power of the engine. I live in West Virginia where there's a lot of back roads. Just a little insight if any body knows anything about these cars.

Re: Oil sending unit making check engine light come on?

Hey I just thought of something. If I could do a engine swap and put in a DOHC 1.9 instead of my SOHC 1.9, would it just be a waste of time? Or should I just fix the oil leak and service engine soon light and trade it in for something newer? I mean I think Advance Auto Parts sells motors and if I could put in a 96 Saturn SW1 DOHC motor then I could fix up the motor a little bit more. Would all that time and money and effort be worth it? Or like I said am I wasting my time trying to do all that? Would it be in my best interest to trade it in for something I can fix up and that I like?

Re: Oil sending unit making check engine light come on?

It's possible, but you'd need the DOHC engine, computer, and intrument cluster; at least. Maybe a tranny too - i know the 5 speeds have different gears (the SOHC manual transmission would work); but an automatic's gear ratios have to match what the computer is looking for. Probably not worth your time. It would bump your power up a bit, but it would be a lot of effort for it. It seems you really want a different car anyway, so i'd go that route.

Bad sending unit would not trigger the CE light; you have other issues as well. Without a code though it's anyone's guess.

Re: Oil sending unit making check engine light come on?

I do I mean I love my Wagon dont get me wrong it's just my whole life I've always owned used cars and I've NEVER owned a brand new right off the lot car. I think I'm finally doing good enough for myself that I can afford one so I'm gonna fix up the Saturn just a little bit more and trade it in. I dont really know what I wanna go test drive. I'd like to have something 5-speed and 4 door with ample power to begin with but have a lot of aftermarket parts for it. And also something that can handle real good too cause that's the most important thing

Re: Oil sending unit making check engine light come on?

Well I got a new sending unit and I took the old off to put the new one on. Well the old one had no o-ring at all so what I did was put the o-ring off the new unit and put it on the old unit. I took the new unit back and told them that I didn't need it. Well it hasn't leaked for a couple of days now. Do y'all think that because the old unit didn't have an o-ring on it that that was causing the oil leak? Because it hasn't leaked since I put it on.
