Shot the gap on a Camry

Cruising along in the carpool lane at about 70, 6-year-old daughter in the car. Up ahead is a brand-new topaz-colored Camry at about 65. Well, I eased into the next lane and, maintaining speed, figured I'd ease around him.

A car was in my lane up ahead, but I had plenty of room. I'm ready to move back when I notice the Camry is still with me. So I sped up some more, thinking he was not watching his speed. He sped up some more.

Being in kind of a lazy mood I decided to try and take him in fifth (06 Subie, 2.5 liter). We were somewhat even until I felt the boost kick in, at which point I shot ahead, and with the car in front getting close, cut the Camry off a little closer than necessary, watching him recede.

Boost in fifth? I then looked at the speedo -- well past 90 and climbing, and in a well-patrolled section of road. Slow down!

I was tempted to flip the Camry driver off, but I did not want my daughter to ask what I was doing. She copies everything.

Re: Shot the gap on a Camry

Well, I guess if she copies everything you do we can expect her on here in lets say 15-20 years posting stories of her highway racing with her kid in the car... Well, lets hope not... I speak only for myself as a parent. You are an idiot for putting a 6 year old child that cant make her own choice in the matter in that position...

In any case... It sounds like you were being a dick when trying to go around him, but whatever thats all you. I will say this, it was obviously a 4 cylinder and not the 268/248 six cylinder or you wouldnt have just eased into it in 5th all relaxed and shit and pass him...so no points for beating the weak ass toyota... or he saw you driving like a moron with a child in the car and decided not to provoke trouble like I would have done...

That's the whole point. I did "ease." I was a bit horrified when I saw I really had no idea of my speed.

A good point and the best flame I have ever read.

Re: Shot the gap on a Camry

I had a guy not be able to get around me on the freeway. When he finally managed to make it ahead he brake checked me...with his infant in the back. I didn't even block him and he did that. People who are so careless with their kids deserve to have them taken away. Why even pass? Why were you not in a slow lane keeping it mellow with your kid? 55 saves lives, 90 ends them. Mother of god people say I'M crazy.

Re: Shot the gap on a Camry

eventho it was bad to be going that fast with a 6-year old kid in the car,, he didnt realize he was going that fast and admitted his faults. just be a little more weary of your passengers next time an econo-boxer tries to block you in.

Re: Shot the gap on a Camry

Good points here. On topic, my brother got cut off bad by a guy in a corolla and pursued. Buddy went nuts around a turn and with my bro mid turn he slammed the brakes making my brother rear end him (unavoidable) and cause significant damage. Brutal that he intentionally caused an accident - WAY more brutal that he had his two kids in the backseat! It made it so I wanted to have a "brief chat" with him.

It seems this story is about just not watching speed closely - but there are people that just should not have a liscense or kids like buddy in the corolla.
